Unanswered: What engines can I put into my 70 Opel gt

What engines can I put into my 70 Opel gt? I would like to keep from cutting on my car if possible. Also what transmissions will fit as well?

Both of those questions can be found by using the search button. It is your friend so don't be afraid to use it.

Anyway:

Larger CIH engines are bolt in upgrades (2.0 - 2.4L) so no cutting but others have fit a wide variety of engines into the Opel depending on the owners skill or how deep their pockets are.

As for transmission the getrag 240, T-5 from the Chevy S10, and the rare and expensive Opel ZF 5 speed can all easily be made to fit. I personally am using a close ratio 4 speed with a 2.4 CIH engine from Europe but I am sure a great deal of other transmissions could in theory be made to work if you didn't mind a shift location other than stock (ie at your elbow)

It may help to clarify what exactly you are looking to stick in the GT.

I think the two biggest questions you need to ask yourself are 1: what do you want to do with the car & 2: how much are you willing to spend to get there.

Engine Info. Needed

Gumby,
Thank you for the information that you gave me it will help me alot. What I am wanting to do is make this car my daily driver. So it does not have to have the power to peel my eyelids back. But more than enough to out run a chevette. LOL!
I'm working on a budget and I have alot of guys saying I am nuts for wanting to restore this car. They are only half right.

My 2 cents....make sure when deciding what engine to put into the small bay of that GT you think of availability of replacement parts and knowlege of mechanics that would work on the engine, including you.

I put an engine from a 88 Ford Thuderbird into my 71 GT. I can get parts, I can get the engine repair book and understand it, and it is a pretty reliable engine. Couple that with the fact that I have turbocharged it with a front mounted intercooler and it looks badass and makes the car FAST and I am pretty pleased with that.

Almost done at the paint and body shop folks...the price of free paint and body work....TIME. I'll pay it.
