Unanswered: Opel Monza cls 1600
I bought a 1991 Opel Monza CLS 1600 recently without an engine. Yesterday I tried to fit a 1600 SV engine into it but somehow it does not want to fit. The flywheel seems to be hitting the driveshaft (cv joint). Is there a particular angle the engine should be tilted? Must the shaft be removed first? Must the gearbox be completly down when the engine is fitted? Please advsie urgently.

have not seen that model of opel but as its FWD
normally you need the gear box loose so one or both drive shafts need to come out of the hubs so you can swing the box round with the gear box mount off there was for a while one funky gear box on opels where you could remove the input shaft of the box to change the clutch without splitting the box and engine , if its one of them (big hex plug on wheel side of box and bottom half of bell housing removes fully ) you need to slide the shaft back to have the room , jack the bell end up and feed engine in to aim right at it from side and it should drop right in , i did an engine change on a vectra or cavalier with this box and it was the easiest change i ever did can you post some pics of it as we are mainly a club for pre 75 cars sold in the USA and it helps the members drool if they can look at models they did not get ![]() hth

- there never was a 1600 Monza, the smallest one was a 2.0 (in 1983-84);
- there was never a "CLS" version; - I haven't heard of a lot of Monzas in the US yet; - the Monza was always rear wheel drive; - exactly what kind of engine do you want to drop in? - are you sure you have a Monza??? - post pics!!! Dieter

These "Monzas" are what was a Kadett E in Germany, and available as a Pontiac LeMans at the other side of the pond. If somebody mentiones "Opel Monza", I first of all think about a Monza as it was sold in Europe. When we are talking about Monza = Kadett E here, yes, then they are FWD and had all kinds of smaller engines up to 2.0 liter. Dieter

Right, this one looks like a front wheel drive Kadett E. The German Monzas were actually very nice looking large coupes, based on the Senator, with motors from 2.0 to 3.0. My Dad had one in the early 80s, here is a sample pic:

That's a 2 + 2 monza, not at all like mine, which is a TC or Towne Coupe. A notch back body style, with a different look than the 2 + 2.

No big thing, I just wanted to differentiate that there were two models of the monza. It's like telling folks you have an Opel and right away they would think you have a GT instead of a Kadette, Manta, or another model.
