Unanswered: Will a 240 or 260 Datsun Transmission and engine fit an 69 Opel Gt?

If anyone has done this please let me know . Hubby is wanting to put them in my Opel and I want to know will it work?Any help would be great.

The datsun engine is an L6, way too long for the application.
Can it be done, yes but you need to cut extensively!

A couple of months ago there was a GT in Ohio that had a 280z engine. For 600 you could have bought that. May still be available.

72 Gt in Okeana, OH
600 for 6 cylinder 280z engine and 5 speed trans
Wish I had 600, MAN!

My wife has a 1972 Opel GT in the garage that is running great, but it has been eyeing my extra 280ZX Tubo engine and Transmission that is in there too. I did some measuring and if I move the radiator to the front of the radiator support, there should be JUST enough room without having to cut unto the firewall. I haven't measured the transmission tunnel, but the Borg-Warner T-5 is pretty wide, so some modification might be in order there.

We also have a Chevy 350 in the garage that we picked up for my father-in-law's pickup. That would be lots of fun under the hood too. I refuse to put in an automatic though. Does anyone know which manual transmission people put behind the 350?

I am actually leaning toward getting another 350 to put in the Opel and keeping the 280ZX Turbo engine for my 240Z. This would keep the Opel legal for autocrossing since both the Opel and the 350 came from the same manufacturer.

Any thoughts on which way to go with this engine swap?

Well for a start either engine swap will require a complete rear-end change and a whole lot of strengthening on the uni-body. As for a T-5 fitting in the tunnel, I've got one from an S-10 in mine and with the shifter centered in the console hole, it fits just fine. No modification on the tunnel required, but I did have to shorten the throw-out arm by about 1.5". It makes the clutch a bit harder than normal to dis-engage, but not severly. To find out what's needed for the 5.7L, contact saxybiker on this forum, they've got one in a GT that was done RIGHT. HTH.

If you want to try something like this, why not pick up another GT? There is a guy South of you about 100 miles that has a bunch of bodies to choose from. I visited a couple weeks ago and there are plenty of rebuilders there.
If you start killing....I mean swapping on your wife's car, you could end up with something that isn't possible (whether because of time, cash or difficulty).

That ought to be fun to watch. I'm trying to decide which vehicle I'd like to challenge you in, my Dodge Ram, my old Buick LeSabre or maybe just borrow a stock Opel.

Not questioning your driving ability, just that it will take alot to make it handle.
