Hey there guys and gals!

I am fairly new to all this Opel stuff, but I find it a thrill to source random parts from other vehicles.

I have a 71 GT and its needs a bit of brake work since I got it. So far I have install Volvo 4 pot caliper with Honda Accord rotors. Some how I got extremely lucky and got some calipers that DID NOT have the dual brake lines. Also, I had to replace the soft brake line at the rear axle. I ended up using to Stainless lines from a Mitsubishi Eclipse that I have laying around.

Well, Now on to the title of the thread...

After all the bleeding of the brakes the master & boost finally went to **** and decided to blow brake fluid through the intake when the brakes were applied.
After quite a bit of reading up and searching I could not find locally a Geo master/boost combo, so I hit up a friend of mine that has 3 miatas sitting in his bake yard.
I went out and checked em out and they are almost Identical to the Geo master that everyone uses. I snag it off master and boost together and decided to try and make it fit.

That work will be down tomorrow but I will document everything and add as many pics as possible...

Stay tuned!

Hi Everybody,

Here is a list of things I have done so far.

Drained and replaced oil, transmission, and radiator fluids.

Replaced upper and lower radiator hoses, and heater hoses.

Replaced oil and fuel filters.

Replaced the valve cover gasket.

When I was changing the oil, I had the engine heated up nicely, and opened the cap on the valve cover, and then got under the car with my drip pan ready, and unscrewed the oil plug. I had no idea that the oil would come shooting out like a garden hose! It shot right over the exhaust pipe! I got the drip pan under and caught most of the oil, and soaked up the spill with cat litter.

When I removed the oil filter I was surprised to find what looks like the ORIGINAL oil filter that came new with the car.

It's hard to believe that someone might have put over 78,000 miles on this car and not changed the filter ONCE. Having said that, the date under the valve cover is '72, so the engine must have been replaced at one time.

The air filter also looks like an original.

Yesterday we took the car on our drive around the big country block, and when we got home there was a bunch of smoke coming from the manifold area. The only way I can figure out how to get at the manifold is to take out the carburetor, and I'm having a hell of a time getting that sucker out. I've managed to get the four nuts off the four vertical bolts and started taking the carb apart to find what's still holding it down, but maybe someone here can tell me if there is an easy way to do this. I'm thinking, once I get this off I might as well replace it with a Weber 32/38, but I'll have to do some saving up to do that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Notigan recently sent me his tale of being stuck on an island during a hurricane whilst attempting a solo 3-day kayaking adventure. I'll let him add it to this thread if he chooses. In response, I wrote him two of my experiences. Any of you fellow boatsmen who care to add your tall tales may feel free to do so. Here goes:

One summer day just before a hurricane hit I started paddling from the south end of Ocean City, NJ., intending to cross the channel at the causeway bridge, set foot on Sea Isle, and head back. Maybe 45min to an hour at most. I'm in my sit on top Ocean Kayak Scrambler. Everything was cool until I got to the middle of the channel between the two islands. What most people don't realize is that water waves are like sound waves, and like sound waves, they BOUNCE off of things. You don't notice it at the beach because the waves coming in are big and the waves bouncing back are small and the waves hit the beach generally parallel and bounce back parallel. The bigger incoming waves generally neutralize the bounce back waves, so they are cancelled. Not so at the inlet. The current in the inlet often neutralizes the incoming waves. Not on this day. The previous incoming waves that had passed through before I got to the middle were bouncing back off of the corners of Sea Isle and Ocean City and were rebounding at 45* angles to the big incoming waves.

As I got to the mid-point all three waves converged and crashed into each other at the same time.

Right where I was.

Pow! Me and the boat got popped up 15 feet in the air. I get tossed off the boat. It's upside down. I frantically search for and retrieve my paddle. The "ricochet" waves from the beach corners and the big incoming waves are repeatedly meeting and lifting me and the boat I'm clinging to. 15 feet up and 15 feet down and 15 feet up and 15 feet down. One moment the water is 5 feet deep and my feet are touching the sand and 3 seconds later my feet are 15 feet above the sand. Then on the sand then not on the sand then on the sand then not on the sand. It's hard enough to get back on a kayak when you have ground to stand on. One second my feet are touching the ground and before I can push off and get myself on my boat the waves lift the boat and negate my jump attempt to get back on. This went on for about 15 minutes. Finally I managed to slither onto my boat and I lived to tell the tale.

The other story involved me and my buddy riding waves just off the beach in O.C. I had just cut and installed a hatch opening in my wave riding kayak for internal storage. Normally those boats are like a balloon and there's very little water seepage into the boat. Unless, of course, you don't screw the hatch cover in all the way. After about an hour I notice at one point that I must be getting tired because I can't seem to catch any waves. Then one hit me that would have normally sent me and the boat heading for the beach. It hit me like I was a pier on a dock. I didn't budge. That's when I noticed the 10" diameter hole in my boat! Water is constantly washing over a wave riding kayak. My hatch cover was gone, I was right smack in the center of the wave breaking zone, and the boat is filling up fast with water as every single wave washed across me. Aaagghh! My hatch had a floatation thingy on it. I see it bobbing about 100 feet away. I call to my buddy "Yo man! My hatch cover came off, there it is, go get it!" He makes a mad dash for the cover, retrieves it, and starts paddling like a madman for the shore. "Yo man! Where ya going!?!" He continued to paddle like a madman for the shore. "Yo d**khead! I'm sinkin' here!" He's now standing on the beach like a madman. "DUDE!!......I.....AM......SINKING...!!!!....I.... ...NEED........THE........HATCH.......COVER....... ..TO..........STOP.........THE.......WATER!!!!!!"

He had totally brain farted and thought that the most important thing was to retrieve the cover so it wouldn't get lost. It totally didn't dawn on him that I needed it NOW to stop the water, otherwise my boat was gonna sink and disappear into the ocean never to be seen again. Lotta good a "saved" hatch cover was gonna do me without a boat to put it on. I was about one gallon of water away from seeing Davy Jones locker when he finally arrived with my hatch cover. It took about 20 minutes to get my 95% filled with water boat the 100 feet to the shore.

Team Tinyvette is getting ready. Are there any other Opels out there running in this race? I know there was a So Cal team, or two.

This will be a true 24 hour race, 10 AM until 10 AM, non-stop, in the desert, in the middle of summer. What could possibly go wrong?

This will be our second 24 hour race. Out last, at Reno-Fernley last year, was memorable. We expect more of the same this time, too.

Details
What: a true 24 hour LeMons race
Where: Buttonwillow Raceway
When: June 30-July 1, 2012

Preparations
We have lights that work well. Last year we built a light bar that bolts on and plugs in in just a minute or two. We are set of lights.

We're redoing our Lexan rear window. Our last one got damaged. We normally don't run with any window except the windshield but we need something to cut down on the light from the over-lit cars behind us. We'll put one of those silvery films on it. That worked well last year. BTW, we install this window during a normal fuel stop, the one that takes us into the night, and we remove it again in after sunrise. It goes on and comes off quickly.

The car itself is good and ready to go. After our last race all we had to replace was an LED on the instrument panel. 25 cents, a new record. The dead alternator was under warranty and got replaced for free.

But I guess we can't leave well enough alone. We just have to mess with the one part of the car we have never worked on. The rear end. It had been clunking and getting worse. Plus we found out we had the c-clip style rear end. So we're replacing it. We got one off a car at the Rancho Cordova Pick-N-Pull and today, Mother's Day being a perfect day to work on cars.

Alan and I replaced the wheel studs with nice new long ones, replaced the front seal, and scrubbed up the other parts. We'll finish it up and put it back in later this week.

Interesting thing about this rear end. The diff cover had a hole near the bottom that had a rubber plug in it. Just above the axle it had another, but that one was open and it looks like it was made using a punch and a BFH. At first I thought maybe they had installed a crude oil cooler, but then thought maybe they wanted a drain plug but then found that the oil was too viscous to come out that hole without letting air in somewhere else, so the punched a hole it in. Actually, that doesn't make much sense either because they could just open the fill hole. Whatever. Another mysterious PO fabrication.

Another twist to this. When I removed the torque tube a handful of fine yellow-brown dirt fell into the opening of the diff. Great, a mess. It turns out bees had made a nest in there. We flushed the thing out using the washer at Evil Genius Racing (Thanks, John) and installed a new seal.

Everything else looks good. John had checked the clearances and lash and said it seemed like a new unit and looked strong enough to take 200 hp.

Last item of the day was the postmortem on the transmission we lost at our previous race. Normally our tranny failures start with shifting that gets crunchy and a little later we finally loose a synchro and it jams in 3rd gear. We figured it was heat related and were sporting a RallyBob (Big thank, Bob!) pan and Shockproof oil. We should be good with the heat problems now.

This time the tranny failed with no warning and it would still shift and work in any gear except 3rd. On the bench the input shaft turned rough. Something was wrong with the bearings. I opened it up today and found fine bits of steel in the pan (not brass this time) and digging deeper the was a lot more in the gears right behind the input shaft. The synchro looked good, but part of the spring was gone. See the pics below. What breaks something like that? Rough shifting (blame the driver), heat (situation normal), bad luck (blame the PO)?

Anyway, to sum up, new LED, replaced the rear window, replaced the diff, and by week's end the car will be ready to race. We will still be tweaking and tuning, and I have a few small electronic upgrades to make. But for the most part, we are ready to go 6 weeks before the race. Plenty of time to relax before the near double all-nigher of the 24 hour race. It WILL be fun, and you WILL be hearing about it!

Pics from our FB page
Installing the new wheel studs.

New wheel studs. Just replace the gaskets and these axles go back in.

The guilty synchro spring

The missing part of the broken spring could be found in places like this:

I had read in a thread here that the “best” ultimate spark plugs for our engines was:

NGK Iridium BPR6HIX

And the next best was:

NGK Platinum BP6HVX

So I went to my excellent local auto parts store and they didn’t stock either of them, but they cross-referenced and said that they did have these Denso’s which they said were the equivalent:

Denso Iridium IW20 (5306)(I06) – the last two were other designators on the box.

I have a high energy MSD ignition system and I wanted to increase my plug gap because of this, so why not upgrade the plugs at the same time. They came with .040” gaps which suited me just fine. My previous plugs had less than 5000 miles, but had weathered all my timing, carb, and upgrade adjustments since I’d gotten the car 5 years ago, so a clean slate with the best possible new plugs seemed warranted. My old plugs(which were the correct light brown color, indicating that my air/fuel ratio was in the proper range), gapped at .030-.035”, were:

Champion RL95YC

I put the new plugs in and they work just fine. I’ve only driven a low speed 10 miles with them. I seem to idle a bit faster and run a tad smoother, which seems to indicate that I’m burning gas more efficiently. I noticed that the threaded part of the new plugs was ¼” longer than the Champions and I felt them “push through” some built up deposits, where the previous plugs had reached their insertion limit, while installing them. They performed as advertised so I was happy.

Then that darn Mike Notigan emailed me with concern that plugs that were too long would affect my wave fronts and eventually give me trouble with hot spots from carbon build up and such. Dang him! Dang him to heck! My initial euphoria was popped like a bubble gum blow out all over my face.

I had a spare unrestored 2.0 head in the basement, so I just got done installing both plugs to see what we shall see. Yup, the new plugs stick a whole ¼” into the combustion area. Below are pics.

So my question is: Is this totally unacceptable? I should return them, right? They probably increase my compression a little(Wheeeee!). Should I keep them?

Would the NGK Iridiums listed above have been the proper length?

Please help me out in obtaining the “ultimate plug” for street use in a moderately jacked up 2.0 engine.

Yesterday we received the sad news that my Father-in-Law, Ed Joint, passed away at the age of 89. My wife had driven out to Erie, Pa. last week because he had suffered a stroke and it didn't look too good.
Ed was one of the original 101st Airborne Band of Brothers who fought in WWII. He was a quiet man who rarely spoke of his part in the war or the hardships his company endured.
He had been flown to Paris a couple of times in the last few years along with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielburg and the other surviving members of E Company. I could only imagine what he had endured when he would speak of trying to dig a fox hole in the frozen earth of France with bullets whizzing over his head.
We lost a hero and a dear friend and great father today.
Arrangements are not complete but we will be driving to Erie later this week.

Sure, I knew that some high end, sport, and super cars sold exclusively in Europe had our engines back then. Via Top Gear, I've learned that a lot of "recently" made cars in Europe have them.

So my question is: What pre-1990 euro made mass production "normal people" cars, that were made for the European market, came with US made 6-8 cylinder engines?
