manta fuel problem

hi i have a 1975 manta and i keep having this problem and it seems to happen only on my way home from school.. :/ when its hot!!!
i will attempt to speed up about half way home from school and the car starts to die... as if its not getting enough gas,, then the idle becomes realy rough and the engone shuts off.. once off i try to start it again and the fuel pump isnt pumping at all so is the fuel pump overheating or is it just trashed? if so were can i get a new fuel pump for my manta???
it is a 1.9L the fuel injected one sold in the U.S.

Sounds like my pump when it died. It didn't go all at once but would stop pumping until it cooled down then the car would start right back up for a few miles. But it could be a dirty fuel pump fuse contact or it's wiring contact.
Also the fuel filter or tank pickup sock filter may be dirty. All could be causing your symptoms. I just took my tank pickup out to clean the level gauge potentiometer and replace the cork float and it isn't too big of a job. Just be sure to buy gas compatible gasket material of at least 1/8 thickness (or stack two 1/16 thickness like I did) to make a new tank gasket since they are no longer available the last I looked.
If you decide it is the pump, originals are very scarce and expensive but this Airtex E8312 multi-application EFI pump works just fine and may be in stock at some parts stores. You'll have to adapt the wiring, not hard to do. Here it is for Advance Auto Parts:

On our 1975 Manta the fuel starvation was because of a clogged fuel sock inside the gas tank. The tank was full of sludge. We had to remove the tank, remove the fuel sock from the inside, have the tank boiled. Then put on an external fuel filter to replace the fuel sock.

thanks for the info... sounds like what aardvaark said happened to him... cause once i let the car rest for a while it will start up and run well.
and i always drive to school in the morning when its very cold but on the way home from school is blazing hot. so im going to check out the links to that fuel pump u showed me and ill let u guys know how it goes :] thanks!!!!

oh one more thing... my manta has the fuel filter located in the engine area and is a verry small clear filter... i know it isnt origional so i was wondering if i should eliminate that one and replace a new one near the tank like it should be ?

Yes, toss the plastic one. It's not designed for the higher FI pump pressure of flow capacity. The Wix filter is made for the Bosch systems. You also might want to replace the rubber hose sections back by the tank while you at it and have things apart.
The small hoses are not a problem. Just standard FI hose. The 5/8" dia pump suction hose is a bit of a problem since it's so short it will kink when installed.
Two solutions. Make a big loop in the hose so it doesn't kink or hit the exhaust pipe or use heater hose and place a coil spring in it to keep it from collapsing in a tight bend. I did the latter with a hardware store spring.

And the Airtex pump is only about 1/3 the price of the OE style pumps.
If time isn't an issue, you may find a better deal on Fleabay.

im gonna try buying the airtex pump cause i actually use the car for school and i need the new pump installed as soon as possible :P thanks though :]
