Megasquirt Kits- Group buy/build??

@All: I use a replica Haltech with double throttlebodies from VGS. The electronic system is more than 10 years old.

It has:

Programmable Injection and Ignition. (Laptop)
All settings possible in function of voltage, temperatures, throttle pos,...
Closed loop is possible.
It can contain 2 programs, swap with external switch.
It drives Wasted spark (DIS)
Everything is in one box, including relays, end-transistors,....

Now it seems that MS2 can't drive DIS(wasted spark) and that an external relay-board and ignitiondriver is needed.

I hope UltraMegaSquirt gives the solution.

you don't have to use the external relay board its just a way (if you need to) interface the FI system to your car

on the Opel you don't even need DIS or direct fire


a lot of newer cars need it (spark control) since the FI computer controls the spark so if they remove the stock FI ECU they need to have spark control

the big thing about this Megasquirt is Cost--- you can get a prebuilt one for $300 or 239 Euro's

the FI ECU i like (if reports are true) is the Freedom ECU

The MS1 (with MSnS-E firmware) and MS2 can both be used to control a distributor based ignition system or a distributorless Ford EDIS system, which can be adapted to pretty much any vehicle pretty easily.

The MS2 is not widely available now but I did get ahold of a few of the first batch of them. I'm listing them assembled on Ebay - search for MegaSquirt. Or here is a direct link to the first one I've got listed.


I've got a pretty steady supply of assembled MS1 units coming in now. Later this week I'll be able to start offering them with black powder-coat case and a limited warranty as I'm now have them professionally manufactured rather than hand-assembled.

I've got a very stable supply/demand of kits going. I'll also have wideband systems available later this week, for as little as $199 with sensor.

Anyways- hopefully this helps a bit with the ignition questions. As for the relay board it's not required though may come in handy when converting a carb'd car to EFI.

Funny Wasted spark DIS coils GM uses over there. 7 connections? So they must have an internal Logic unit.

My GM DIS coil has 1 connector, 3 wires. Ground, positive1 (coil1, spark 1&4) , positive2 (coil2, spark 2&3)

So I'm looking out for an ECU that can drive that simple thing, without external units.

Just wanted to comment on DIYAutotune. These guys were awesome to deal with. They are the *Opel GT Source* of the Megasquirt world. Fast responses to both emails and phone calls, excellent technical help, and I ordered my parts Tuesday...got them today (Friday). All parts in stock. Looking forward to doing business with them again, as this is the first of (hopefully) many Megasquirt Opel projects I'll be doing. Thanks Jerry and Matt of DIYAutotune.

They shipped very fast to Europe,
I will buy more stuffs from them.
I also did good business with RS Autosport (Rodney Sparks),
But I think he only sells ready for use ECU, no kits to build yourself.

I was thinking maybe trying to buy 10 kits or so, and maybe as payment to the assembler we, as a group, buy him or her a Megasquirt unit so they get a freebie? Then maybe I could prep a bunch of fuel rails/injector packages with a modern TB and we'd have a nice 'bolt-in' programmable EFI system.

I'm not in any position to be prepping complete systems right now. I am currently experimenting with modifying OEM injector plates to fit o-ring injectors for my own use, and I've previously covered the mods to fit a modern throttle body w/TPS onto the Opel intake in another thread. Not sure if I'd want to make any fuel rails either...isn't worth the time unless a whole bunch of them are made, which means we'd need commitments from Opelers looking to do this mod to their EFI (at the same time). I can't afford to finance a project such as this by myself in other words.

Bob the injector plates from C24NE (Omega/Frontera) & C30NE (SenatorB/Omega) fit the O-ring injectors,
Also you can use the C30NE fuel rail,
Easy mod for CIH4 (just cut the last 2 outlets).

Forgive me, if I am wrong, but I don't think a 1.9 injected motor was ever built. All discussion that I know of on this site is to fit a 2.2 injection manifold etc. onto a 1.9 motor.

Actually Jeff, the last German Opels to come into the US had our same 1.9 basic engine fitted with an early Bosch fuel injection system. There's an ongoing thread from Bob discussing the fitment of a throttle body from a Nissan Sentra (with TPS, etc.) onto this plenum that can serve as a base for a megasquirt or other aftermarket EFI system. The thing I'm not sure on is what injector options are available when going that route.

Have a look around the site and you'll see several cars outfitted with the stock 1.9 EFI setup. The 2.2 EFI option you mentioned only works on the 2.2 and 2.4 heads, so the other setup is ideal for MANY Opelers looking for a setup that will fit their 1.9 head. Finding these plenums is the hard part (and the associated thermostat housing).

Just to expand on what Todd said, Paul Heebink drove his 75 FI Sportwagon here from Yuma for the Coronado Classic Car Races/Car Show. I put pics up of his car on the dyno rack and the run sheet. With 106,000 Miles on the odometer and box stock, he got close to 65 HP at the rear wheels. Gary Ruyle's single carbed 2.4 GT dialed in at 119.9 at the rear wheels the same day.

Todd, Bosch hose-barb style injectors are a direct fit to the Opel fuel rail and injector plates. Trouble is, they are getting scarce and are kinda pricey, plus there are limited choices available. But the '036' injectors I mentioned in the thread are drop-ins, and are more than enough for most any naturally aspirated engine in terms of fuel flow.

I decided to try to fit the newer o-ring injectors because they are cheaper, more plentiful, and arguably better made. You can either use the injector plates from a 2.4 or 3.0 litre Opel engine (tough to find in the US of course), or modify the stock injectors plates (like I'm having done right now), or weld in some aluminum injector bungs direct to the intake manifold. The last option is the most labor intensive, plus the insulative value of the phenolic injector plates is lost.

As far as fuel rails, if you are going turbo or 200+ hp naturally aspirated, you'll need a larger fuel rail for best results. You can either weld/braze some 5/16" tubes onto a large diameter tube to make a hose-barb style fuel rail, or buy some extruded aluminum rail if you want to make a custom rail to fit the o-ring style injectors. Lastly, you could use the 2.4 CIH fuel rail or cut down the 3.0 CIH 6-cylinder fuel rail to fit o-ring style injectors.

I have a set of stock 2.4 o-ring injectors, 2.4 injector plates, and 2.4 fuel rail going onto a 1975 Opel EFI 1.9 intake manifold for my 1972 wagon EFI upgrade. Everything bolts right up! But those were the only 2.4 parts I had, so I needed another viable option for injector plates, hence the conversion of the 1.9 injector plates currently under way.
