Pump Direction

I forgot to label the flow direction on my fuel pump (the standard mechanical one). Does connection on the cap go to the gas tank or to the carb?

Put a finger over one of the two and manually operate the pump - the one that sucks is the inlet ......
If it is on the motor just attach a suitable length of fuel line to one of the pipes and turn the motor over on the starter - the one that sucks is the inlet!

i'm doing the same thing right now and i didn't get fuel pumping to the carb after about 10 seconds of cranking with the hoses either way, while i was switching them the pump would let fuel flow through it (fuel line from tank connected but one from the car not connected), this makes me think something is wrong with the pump, or would that happen anyway. or am i just not cranking for long enough?

Since there is a strainer directly below this cap, that nipple would go to the gas tank.

Do you have the ~3/16" phenolic spacer installed between the mechanical pump and the timing cover?

yeah i do. i think i'll swap the fuel pump. i have one on my other engine that i know for sure is good.
