Unanswered: Reinstalling Fuel Pump

Before I remove my fuel pump, I wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything special I needed to do. I had heard the push rod kind needed to be put back in a special way. Any help is appreciated before I actually pull it out. My hope is that I just have bad gasket rings... Fuel lines are clear, I get fuel through, just not enough.

Soak the gaskets in oil for a while before you install, dont forget the spacer, and dont over tighten.
I would also put a clear in-line fuel filter just before the pump so you know your getting clean fuel from the tank.Thats it. 10 minute job.
Try the search feature on this site, chances are if you have any ???'s you'll find the answers there!

Good job! First post ever, and you found the correct Forum. Thanks!

The fuel pump is quite simple to remove, as yellaopelgt says. Just make sure that you have the thick spacer gasket in place (without it, the diaphragm can get over-extended and ruptures). And be gentle with the bolts that attach it to the aluminum timing chain case. They are easily stripped, but can be repaired with a Heli-Coil or other readily-found and easy-to-use thread repair kit.

But if your pump leaks oil now, you likely need a new pump, as there is an internal seal that fails and allows crank case oil to seep around the push rod and out the little oval weep hole.

The only real trick about the fuel pump is that it must be removed before the distributor can be pulled out (the plunger rod runs on a cam on the distributor shaft above the dizzy drive gear)

Also watch the fuel lines when you remove them. The gas tank is above the fuel pump level, and will completely drain out if you don't pinch or plug the line in front of the pump.

Oh yea, another suggestion. A better place to install that clear fuel filter is at the back of the car, just as it leaves the tank fitting (between the steel line at the tank and the nylon line to the pump). Many also take the time to remove the internal screen in the tank, which often gets blocked by sludge and varnish. Do a look around this Forum or in the "Opel Tips and Tricks Forum" for detailed instructions on that procedure.
