Unanswered: Fuel Pump Leaks Oil

I'm on my third fuel pump due to oil leaking from the small vent hole at the botom of the pump. What's the deal? Are they all just bad? Oil pressure never goes above 3 on the gage. I know y'all are going to say "install an electric one" but I am trying to keep it original as much as I can.

Thanks for the thoughts in advance.....

You should have a spacer with a gasket on each side. If not Nobody has diagnosed your problem.

Seal ....

If you look at the fuel pump before you put it on you will see the operating end has a seal around the actuating shaft that pushes down into the body of the pump. If it is a NOS pump that has been sitting around a while or a used pump that seal can deteriorate. Good gasket sets have a new one of those wee round disc shaped seals in them - one of the seals that very few people know what it is for and it never gets replaced. So have a look through any old gasket set remains that you have and see if there is one amoung the bits left over. That is usually where to oil leaks out - the hole is there to let it escape once it gets past the pump shaft seal so the pump diaphram is not pressurized, which would make it stop working properly .......

I purchased new gaskets with each pump and it is installed with the spacer. It should not leak.

GTJIM, can that seal be replace?

Pump Seals

From the Service Manual:
"If the pushrod is slack in the body the pump must be renewed but if only the seal 5 is worn thenthis alone can be renewed"

"Use all new gaskets and seals and coat the pushrod shaft with engine oil before installation"

The fuel pump must be one that has a ring of screws around the edge holding the two halves together sothat it canbe dismantled as the seal is inside the pump - part #5 on the drawing. Later roll sealed pumps cannot be dismantled ... easily so you have to get a whole fresh pump if you have a leaking one of the newer type - or put up with the leak!

oil leak at fuel pump vent hole

I think I have experienced the oil leaking out the vent hole. My pump was rather new ( 30,000 miles) and had the proper spacer. My pump could not be disassembled,as it was press fitted together.

My leak was so bad, it erupted oil when the engine was revved. You could see it spurt out ,if you watched while someone else gave her the gas.
