Stop driving the car immediately. You've got rotted vent lines. Keep in mind, in this car, the gas tank resides in the same compartment as the driver & passengers. And your running and brake lights are in this compartment as well. Bad combo.
The reason you can only keep a 1/2 tank is that the lines have broken (rotted) away from the top of the tank. There are several threads on this site dealing with this. Use the search engine. This is a life-threatening condidtion - so stop driving the car. |

While you are checking the fuel vapor lines, you might also check the gasket on the fuel sending unit on the top right hand side of the gas tank along with the fuel line running out of the bottom of the tank- ALL are prone to leakage . Best bet are your vapor lines- check the search engine- there are several excellent threads on the subject that should answer all of your questions

I hope you don't smoke while you drive! Pretty easy fix that most of us have done. It just takes a little work to get the spare wheel shelf out and replace the vent lines. Then you can breath easier. Jerry

Moved to the Fuel Tank, Lines, Filters and Venting Forum. Read a few of the posts here, especially the one at the top of the Forum list. HTH

I had this problem too. It was the vent lines in my case. However, I recall while doing my research that the seals around the tail lights going bad can also allow fumes to enter the car. Might be worth checking that out too...
