Unanswered: Re-keying Gas Cap

Hello folks.
I start to re-keying my gascap.
I follow the .pdf how to do this, i found it on Opel Association of North America.
I'm at the third step, the ring is off.
But the outer sleeve, the spring cup and so won't come off.
I see there is a blind rivet (see attachement). Should it be removed before i can go on?
And is it possible to re-keying the doorlocks also?
Thx for your time and answers.
Rini.

I don't remember there being a rivet on my gas cap, there was a plastic ring that melted when I heated the cap to pull the back off, the PO might have used the rivet to hold everything together instead of making a new plastic ring. TMTCW

I was at a locksmith last year and we had a discussion about rekeying the GT gas cap and he said he had done several in the past. When I told him about melting the plastic washer, he smiled and shook his head. He then pointed to the heating duct over his head and said he would put the cap in there for a few hours and the plastic washer would get soft enough to disassemble without destroying it and it could be reused.

I agree, the pop rivet must have been added.

Thx for the tip Gary.
Well...i removed the rivet. Indeed, the parts came off.
But the next part doesn't.
I can turn it around, but thats all.
I will put the whole thing for a few hours in the microwave this evening .
See if there is still that plastic washer and try to make it weak enough to disassemble.
Thx.
Rini.

Ummm... metal and microwaves don't mix too well.... Try using a torch to heat but not melt the washer.

Cool!!!
The Leister Gun did a good job, but the plastic washer didn't survive.
Anyway, i now have a gascap that can be locked.
I think the PO buyed a secondhand gascap without a key. The cap was probably in "locked" position and useless. Thats why the rivet was "popped" in.

innards of the GT Gas Cap

I made a puller to separate these parts wo heat. you can drill out (careful, don't damage the set screw which your are drilling towards.) one of the detents and remove the setscrew with out disassembling the whole cap. and the key clyinder will drop right out. (depends if the cap is locked or not whether that will work)
