Answered: leaky fuel tank

We put some more gas in our fuel tank, and it started leaking everywhere. We took the tank out and it has several spots where it has rusted pinholes in the side of the tank. We need to know the wisest course of action, be it replace the tank, (couldn't find one ANYWHERE!) or repair the holes (and the best method for this is ?) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

NAPA makes a kit to patch holes. PN#765-1546. It works good but if there are very many weak areas in your tank it would be wise to find another tank from someone on this site. I would think someone in your area has an extra from a parts car as the previous post indicated.

There is a resin availible that you can pour in the tank, that will form a resin film that is gas resistant and will fill / cover pin holes, but I don't know a brand name sorry

IIRC, Eastwood and Resto-Motive (POR-15) both have tank repair kits available.

I recently had work done on my GT's gas tank. It was pretty rusty on the inside so the shop tried chemically treating and sealing it. It didn't really work, so we ended up replacing the tank with a good used one. They are available if you look around. I got a nice one from a TX member- "tomcat". Try to get a hold of him because at the time he had several for sale.

Just an FYI.

I ran into fuel delivery problems with my Opel. Turns out that someone had lined the tank with a liner, and it deteriorated and broken down, plugging up my fuel pump. Needless to say, I am not a fan of liners.

You could "rebuild" the tank with new heavy gauge sheet metal. Separate the two halves and then replace the bottom or top half. If I remember correctly they are spot welded together and you could drill out the spot welds and pull it apart.

Or better yet buy a fuel cell. That is what alot of people do.
