Howdy all,
Just curious. No problems fueling in Oregon but now
that I'm in Sacramento I can only trickle the fuel in
to keep the pump from shutting off.
The problem being the vapor recovery bellows doesn't
allow the nozzle to go in far enough to offset the
little flaps in the neck, so the fuel splashes back and
turns the pump off.
My guess is I'll have to somehow yank that little
rubber thingy out. Fuel sender has been reading rather
funky lately, maybe make a weekend project out of
it.
Don.

You can usually just pull the fuel nozzle out about an inch and get it to work fine unless you have an obstacle in there.

Is your car a 1975? If it is, just swap over to an earlier filler neck that was not unleaded-fuel specific.

75 it is Bob. I'm thinkin' if I can just trim a couple
of those little triangle thingys I'll be good as gold.
It's takin' about as long to get the gas in as it does
for this rascal to take it out. Gas mileage was not
what you would call stellar, this last trip out.
Probably about as good as my big block pickup,
which isn't good when you come to think about it.
Speedo don't work so don't know for sure but
thinkin' was gettin' in the neighborhood of 15-18
miles a gallon. Not a neighborhood I'm real keen to
be in, if you know what I mean.

You should check your odo. I kid you not. My '75 Manta is registering only 84.6
miles in a true 100 miles by the interstate posts. 15.4% slow. Did this four times comming back from Charlotte last year.
The speedo is pretty close to correct, correcting for tire diameter compared to the stock 165-80/13's.
You may have a similar deal going. It sure improved my mileage when I corrected for the odo error!

The EPA rating back in 1975 was 19 City and 27 Highway. Well, this was the sticker on my 75 Manta w/manual tranny. I would guess the Ascona would be close to the same. However, I used to get 27 to 29 on the Interstate back in the day when it was stock and in good tune. Now with all my engine/head mods, I get 20-22 around town and 27-29 on the highway, but at a higher speed. You have something terribly wrong is you are only getting 15 - 18. How do the spark plugs look?

Oops. Never mind on the bad odo. Didn't notice your speedo isn't working.
I'm getting about 19 town and 25-26 hwy depending on cruising speed.
