    cleaning the gas tank out

ok trying to go over the tank and i see there is a lot of rust in there .i mean alot ..well and way i need to clean it out .i know some ways but the way the tank it shaped its just brings me down to one way. well two. but the #2 i would not do and that is hot tanking not a good idea it actually hurts the tank and you then cant line it after nothing will stick and hot tanking also is none to make the tank rust faster .. so i need to clean the tank out to put a liner in it .the only other way i know is ROCKS in the tank and then shack like there is no tomorrow and then get all the rocks out and try to vacuum the rest out. then rinse it out good dry it and line it but am asking if anyone knows some better ways i can learn thanks

i do not know if there is a thread on this( tank cleaning ) i tryed to look but nothing so if it was sorry

The above was my solution. Probably out of your price range, but maybe you can make your own by welding one up and then lining it to prevent rust and leaks.

    Por-15

I used the POR-15 fuel tank liner product and I believe they instructed to clean tank out thoroughly with paint stripper. It's been about 7-8 years since I did mine and you may want to check their site and see if they list directions.

I have been using the POR-15 Gas Tank Restoration Kit in my GT's. It includes a Marine Cleaner solvent to remove the old fuel sludge, varnish. I used some links chain and nuts for the cleaning. Then a Metal Prep. zinc coating and dry/time then 2 coats of sealer. Just follow the mfg directions, and don't clog fuel ports Very good product, Need to "Wear Gloves" Hope this will help

And now for something completely different:

I can only imagine what last March's WAWA Super unleaded mixed in with some Stabil is doing to the insides of my GT tank. I hate this alcohol junk they've put in our gasoline to replace MTBE, which was doing fine for so many years. (I know, I know all about the below tank ground contamination from leaking tanks)

And now for something completely different and from left field: Is a fuel cell do-able in the back of the GT? Not having the catalog in front of me, but I do recall thinking about this several years ago for my car when the time comes.......fuel cell tanks, being plastic, eleminate the rust problem.......not sure again what this alcohol does to the plastic tank or the material inside the fuel cell tank.

Just a thought for Pat or anyone else coming to that crossroads where their fuel tank is rusted bad inside. The fuel cells don't seem that too expensive at all.

Has anyone done this to their car?

    Mike

well i just got the rocks for the tank to day i will be trying to brack up the rust and clean it out

mike do you have a site i can look it the gt tanks thanks

I would look at the fuel cells if i even new what would fit the gt. to see the price and comare it to the price of a aluminum and a plastic one . when i get a qoute from some companys .its just a wierd gas tank in the gt wierd shape. i sould say .. when i got the plastic puncture poof gas tank for the jeep reqired for the jeep jamorees to compete in the certain events. i was thinking whay not fuel cell. but then i started to think about the what if the aluminum starts to pit and get rough ..i do not know how to explain what am trying to say ..or even if that use some other kind of mix in the aluminum or line it .. so i hope you know what i mean .. how aluminum starts to brake down in time and from the gas and gases the place where i got my one for the jeep just sell them do not make them so i have to call around to see i know there used for racing but its not like a race car will have the same fuel cell for 10 years or so ...so i decided to go with the plastic fuel tank and i never had looked back i could drop the tank now and it will be the same as the day i bought it and it has a lift time warrenty under and circumstances no matter what it is covered

i do not know to much about aluminum tanks mabay some people can teach me a little about them here ..

Yeah, lots of guys do the fuel cell thing. I'm sure that in some racing it's mandatory. It's either clean and reline, fuel cell, or have one made. I think I'm the only one who's ever said that they had an exact copy, albeit a copy out of aluminum.

The problem with fuel cells in GT's is that the cells that will fit back there don't have the capacity of the oem.......unless you take out the shelf. I like that space back there. I don't carry a spare there, but it's useful space in a car that small.

It would be great if there was some kind of balloon or bag type product that you could stuff into a rusty tank and act as a liner.

Keep in mind that my tank being aluminum was more expensive because of that AND mainly because it mimiced the shape of the oem. There's the part of the tank that points down and is v-shaped. If it wasn't for that you could just make a box shaped tank that would be alot easier to have made.

It's a tough problem to get around. MOST people opt for the fuel cell if relining doesn't work because it's way cheaper than my option.

But my tank is sooooooo cool.

I also had a bad tank to clean. It took a year off and on to clean it. I ordered to por 15 kit also. the marine clean is awesome stuff for the gas residue slug but I resorted to muraitic acid for the rust. Search vw gas tank restoration. There is an article that does a good job of explaining the process.

If you do use that acid be very careful and use all personal protective equipment.

While the tank was out I removed the compression fitting out of the bottom of the tank and taped it to 1/4 npt as I could never find a fitting that fit those threads.

I am only stating what I did and make no recommendation as to correctness of these comments

This is truly a nasty job.

you know your like giveing a kid kindy and takeing it back LOL you have to say i do want to know but anyway there was no sludgein the tank i had it on the heater for two days dryng it out and then i dumped the heavy brunt of the loose rust out and vacuum at much i can get out then put those decorative rocks and some marbles in there and shook and shake and whatever i can do to get the rock and marbles to fly around in there for like ten minutes and dump and shake all of it out ...now there is just powered surface rust in there now for a good cleaner and liner some say por 15 some say something else ???

you know what those marbles look vaguely familiarly i wender if thay are the marbles i lost some time ago

gas tank cleaned out good too cost $2.00 in rock and marbles doller store and the best thing is when i clean the rock off my wife said thay are pritty and then stole them from me and made a nice center piece for the table ...

a bad thing happend today with the tank my son push it off the heater and it fell on the fill tube and bent it in to the middle like flat on one side so i had to fix that too there was nothing rong with it in till then but it is all good now fixed nice round circle agan this would have been nice to put in my thread but that is killed ..that sucks would have made a nice story
