i'm putting my head on the chopping block here for what i'm about to say, as i've already seen Dave (nobody) get chewed pretty bad and start a flame war for it. i HAVE PICTURES and seen with my own eyes the venting system for a 69 GT. this car had a build date of 9/68 so was a EXTREMELY EARLY 69. its simple really, much more than you may have thought. all you have is the venting nipple on the tank, run it in 1 loop, then out the whole in the floor, and your done.

the pictures are on my other computer and may be able to get that computer back out and dig them up if need be. they've been posted here under a thread listing and showing differences between the early model GTs and "normal" model GTs. i can't seem to find the thread now, but can find threads from the same time period involving that car though.

if you still have your sticker on the inside of the drivers door, or you can look on the back of the speedo or tach (i forget which) it gives youa build date in month and year. all it had was the line go up from the nipple, do 1 loop and down through a hole in the floor, it had a rubber grommet and i remember it was close to the vacinity of where the fuel line exits the car.

I just happened to be working on the tail light wiring on my 69 GT tonight and noticed that it didn't have any of the vent line nipples on the filler neck tube. I could only find one vent line on the tank and not the more complex venting of later models.

The 69 tanks just have a single vent line, there's a connection next to the sender unit and the hose just goes straight up and then loops back down out through the bottom of the car. thats it the hose comes out right next to the fuel line maybe 3 inches to the side

the loop is what i'm talking about, where does the hose loop around and is there a purpose to the loop? or could it just go straight from the tank to the hole in the floor?

I too had a gas smell on my 69GT. The loop secures to some metal tabs on the side of the upper fender weld. My smell wasn't from the vent line however, as the line was still flexible. The smell came from the connecting hose for the fill tube and the tank fill flange. The age of the rubber caused the fuel to seep and saturate this connector hose. After purchasing the replacement from Opel GT Source, I haven't had any problems. One should note that the fill tube for the 69 is a little longer, and the rubber conector forms around the tube. I tried to use a connector hose from a 72 and the hose wouldn't work. The hose didn't have any give and the tube would have stuck out of the back at least an inch too far. I try to use used parts when I can, but this one is not reusable.
Just one of those interesting differences with a 69. Gerry |
