I just saw it too and am SOOO thankfull it is pick up only or I would be dead meat with the wife.![]()
I just spotted this on eBay and I'm glad I'm not close by as I would have to figure out how to scrape up some money and not get caught by the "little" woman. Pick up only in Washington state.

A shifter is 65 and no matter what a pan with a dipstick is kind of a neccessity. the missing timing chain tensioner would worry me.
I just sent that listing to John Warga here in Calgary. He is two years and counting to convert his 1.9 to a 2.4, and the crank and head seem to be taking FOREVER. He mentioned that he was thinking of just buying a 2.4 from Gil, but between the price and the shipping from California, it was going to mega bucks. If he bought the WA 2.4, I would be the proud buyer of his spare Getrag!
If he decides to buy this, is there a friendly Opeler in the Tacoma area who could either pick this up and ship it to John, or at least hold on to it while he arranges shipping (or I convince John to take a weekend drive on July 21 for the Tacoma Gathering of Opels)?
TIA

Does the 1.9 starter fit the 2.4, as I don't see one in the photos? I assume that the standard 1.9 distributor can be used (it looks like it is a 1.9 chain case). Any other issues John should be concerned about?

The shifter for the tranny is missing and it looks like timing chain tensioner is missing as well. personally it looks like the motor is very questionable and the tranny is of the pig in a poke variety. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts it was originally purchased for around 1500. Ya it's a 1.9 block too and the pan is a mismatch. please tell me I wasn't the only one to notice the fresh paint and overspray. I'd offer 1200 for it all.
Dave, are you sure it's a 1.9 block. I don't recall the right side front corner having four bosses to bolt something to and our blocks having a GM cast in place. You're right that there are some questionable things going on with it. It still may be a diamond in the rough especially if it can be had for the $1200 you suggested.
Harold
The "24" on the block is also somewhat strange.
The 2.4 block has a "2.0" cast on the block.
You can differentiate the 2.4 engine from a 2.0 block only on the basis of
the engine number and the cylinder bore.
"Man kann ein Auto nicht wie ein menschliches Wesen behandeln - ein Auto braucht Liebe. (Walter Röhrl)"
I did think the "24" looked fishy but didn't know the other stuff. Since the engine and trans. are pick up only I would think he is either honest in what he is advertising, hoping the buyer is ignorant or is one bad mother. I wouldn't be happy if I had to travel very far and found a misrepresented item.

Actually, I'm pretty sure given it's location I know where it came from. I had one offered to me that sounds just like this one several times. The pan and tranny condition are the give aways. However if the tranny alone is good it's worth 1500. The motor is a pull it apart and be sure it's right. If it's in fact a 2.4 the crank alone is worth having. That's a 600 dollar item alone, but I'd want to see first hand the flywheel and clutch setup.
At least it's painted as if it would go in my car... boy wouldn't that mess up some minds. Even Smokey called that cheating.
Trucks from here go to Seattle every day, come back the next, if that helps I could hook you up with their freight broker, Keith.
Actually the 2.4 block is unique, and does say '24' on the side (cast in). I have three of them here and they all have this casting number.
Maybe you are thinking about the 2.2, which uses the 2.0 block directly, but has the production numbers stamped that say '22E'?
This is definitely a 2.4 block, besides the casting number, the large freeze plugs are a dead giveaway.
A 1.9 starter will fit.
You'll need the 2.4 crank pulley too, it has a harmonic balancer integrated into it. Not using it will vibrate the engine apart in short order, thanks to the long stroke engine's harmonics. The engine in the photo doesn't have one installed.
Just a pet peeve of mine, but why does every one with an inline 4-cylinder on ebay say the 'heads have been gone through' or that their engine has 'headers'. I only count one head...![]()
Bump.
John Warga is vacationing in Newfoundland this week, and I am heading off to the mountains until Monday. Aside from those minor obstacles to us buying the engine, John is interested if I were to buy his spare Getrag. Any other informative comments on the 2.4 and Getrag? The vendor says he has the auto-cross member, and that he will now crate and ship if the buyer arranges shipping. Any Tacoma members out there who could check this out for us?
The lack of feedback and the fact that nobody seems to know either the seller or the engine gives me pause. But for $1500 (and the fabulous exchange rate for the Canuck dollar) makes this pretty attractive.
Jeff, tell me how the freight could work. John has other commitments on the July 21 Tacoma Meet day, but a trip to Montana might be doable.
Here are some comments I sent John to consider:
1) might be missing the front damper/pulley. On the 2.4, it is a real harmonic balancer and the 1.9 pulley won’t do
2) the shift knob is missing
3) Possibly the oil dipstick is missing
4) The seller has zero feedback and won’t take PayPal
5) He says he will crate, but shipping has to be arranged. Does that mean that the engine has to be picked up by the freight company?
6) He has provided a number to talk to him, so harder for him to skip town
7) He makes some comment about using double head gaskets. IIRC, that is due to the small chambers on the 2.0 head and the large displacement causing high CR
8) “heavy duty Chevy Clutch”? S-10 clutch? I think I see the bell-housing ground for clearance
9) “Heads gone through”? Could mean new valves, or absolutely nothing!
10) Missing the distributor and starter, possibly chain tensioner?
11) Getrag looks modified to fit GT, but no good photos to see how well
12) I see a case of Molson Canadian in one of the photos. Can we trust someone who drinks THAT?
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions

I'll PM you the phone number of a local freight broker, you two can work out how to get it here, where we have a forklift and storage room. From here there must be a dozen late model pickups a day going north at twice the legal speed limit heading for your vicinity, it can't be that hard to arrange a wild ride. Or it can sit till John wants to come and get it, it won't be any bother here. Whatever works!
Any buyer might want to at the very least ask a seller with 0 feedback a couple pertinent questions about the item and get a response. It is a little unusual that the seller would offer an engine and tranny for their first transaction. Also, I noticed there wasn't any wet spots around the item. Everytime I've been in Tacoma it rained. Jerry
