They never had. Don't test them if you want to see any Opels here. The Russian doll test is as far as you can stretch your luck!!!

7 and a very quiet day

mary is VERY afraid to fly ,well take off and crash sorry land
so she is testing sedatives to use for the flight

might have to start adding then to her tea when she's kicking up a fuss some times, the zombie in the corner watching her stories and quizzes is tranquillity personified

Baz, flying isn't all that bad, I really enjoy it, especially the take-offs and landing. Major acceleration and decceleration. Plus you may get to watch a movie or two, along with the snacks they provide. During my USAF career, talking to the aircrews, they all say the same thing, "Flying is hours and hours of boredom, along with a few moments of sheer terror, called take-off and landing".

I'm not sure that statement is going to do anything to calm Mary down from being nervous about flying!

Another rule of flying Ron, landings must equal the amount of take offs....

Comedian Ron White also added, that when you're flying and a engine breaks down, someone will ask "Can we make it on the other engines?" Ron's answer is "Yep, all the way to the site of the crash...."

About 1 or 2 years ago, I was sitting in a plane in Las Vegas, they fired up the engines, we did the first 100 feet on the runway, when the left engine had a low-speed explosion. The plane came to a quick stop, the fire was put out with the plane's automatic extinguishing system in just a few seconds. The plane was completely filled with smoke, but what worried me most was that it took 12 minutes for the firefighters to arrive at the plane

It always does Gene. To put it in perspective, though, here's a quote of mine to newbies in my section when I was Flight Chief. "The aircraft will always take off, how it lands is up to you." Just to put Baz' mind at ease, also Mary, all aircraft flying, internationally, into the US must meet FAA Part 35 rules for safety.

Aircraft log books

Completely off topic, and for amusement only, here are (supposed) entries from aircraft logbooks, where pilots note problems with the aircraft, and the service crew notes the action taken:

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That’s what friction locks are for.

P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you’re right.

P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget

Hopefully different service crews will have worked on the aircraft that use fly on!

Yeah Baz, that's been around for a long time, the give-away is the missing engine, turbo-jets don't miss. They either explode or fall off the wing. Being we're alreqady off topic, here's a little story. With all the seriousness and stress of maintaining the Blackbird, we often found a release of the pressure by creating some rivalry between the different orginazations of the Wing. One of the best I remember follows: We had a standard aircraft hardware manual, used by all DOD components. It stated all screws or bolts going through self-locking nuts or nutplates had to protrude past the nut at least 1-1 1/2 threads. Quality Control would always find a screw that was too short by looking through the louver panels, and would write it up. In order to get QC off our backs about the screws, we installed several screws that were at least an inch longer than was required, where the QC folks could see them. Of course they wrote them up as being too long. So we asked them to show us, in the manual, where it stated the maximum length of the screws was. Naturally, it wasn't there, only the minimum. So in order to save face, the Manual was rewritten.

I know what you mean Baz. We had an F-101-B and a B-52 go off the runway when I was in NoDak. It was amazing to see the Recovery Teams put air bags under the wings and with just 5 PSI in the bags, lift the entire aircraft off the ground. What was just as impressive, was the same tire pressure (5 PSI) was used in the crane tires to move them.
