Speedo sending unit

Just found out today the reason my Speedo isn't working is that the cable is frozen. I can get a new cable, that's no big problem.
But, it also appears that the speedo sending unit has been all rounded off because of this. So, I'm told I need a new sending unit.
My question is, do I need to try and find an exact OEM or NOS Opel GT sending unit, or are there other "generic" sending units that will fit and work correctly?
Thanks, as always for good advice!

Do you have a picture of the damaged item, some tranny's use a actual gearing mechanism that attaches (earlier models I believe) others use just a gear drive that slides into the transmission to drive speedo cable. If it is just the later, the gear I believe you just have to get the right color of gear and replace. Not for sure but a picture of what your talking about would help a lot in helping you with your question. If it is a blue gear I believe or maybe they are green ones I would have to go find them, I have some stashed and it would cost you shipping to own it..

If everything seems to be going well you have obviously overlooked something.

I don't have a pic. The car is at a shop about 60 miles away. I just talked to the guy putting the exhaust on, and he said he'd take the sending unit apart and see what he can find. I'll post again once I hear back.
