We have all these folks entering the "latter" half of life. Here's something to have a little fun with:

What was the first 8-track you bought?
Be honest now.....

I'm not sure about the first 8-track tape but my first 8-track player was a Mini-8 Player.

Gene,
Can't remember the first 8 track I bought. Not that I didn't have them, I did. In fact at one time had a record deck. Talk about frustration, trying to fit music on one of those things without having track switch during a song.
I do remember my first LP I bought. Beatles, Hard Days Night. Bought the mono version because it was a dollar less than the stereo version. Still have it.
Brian.

I never bought an 8-Track tape (I was into albums and cassette tapes) but the one I can distinctly remember listening to at my Grandmother's house was "Englebert Humperdinck".

My first 8 track tape was a panasonic unit for my car. The first tape was Disraeli Gears by Cream. I use to work for the local tape shop fixing 8 track tapes.

Before that I bought a 4 track tape player. The first tape I bought for that was a Jimi Hendrix tape "Are you Experienced"

How's that for giving up my age?

My first and only 8-track was a Panasonic 4-channel stereo amplifier with a Garrad Zero-100 turntable plugged in to it. I didn't use tapes in it, after fighting with my mom's Lear 4-track tape deck in her car. Prior to getting the Panasonic, I got my first stereo AM/FM radio with turntable that had 78, 45, and 33 1/3 RPM settings. I played my 78s on it constantly. The two records that got a lot of play were The Platters, Only You, and the flip side was an answer to Joe Turner's, Shake Rattle and Roll, titled Bark, Battle and Ball. The other record was by The Soldiers, Tell Me Darling, one of the first Doo-Wop (Rithym & Blues) that I can remember. I'm still looking for a copy of that one. Ahh, the memories this thread brings back.

My wife still has her player at her parents house. It is a stereo/turntable/8-track combo.

Let me add this, this is not to make fun of anyone, I am just amazed at the diversity of music tastes and knowledge we have here on this site. I just thought it would be cool to have a thread to see who likes what...

A bit young...

i am a bit young to really of had much to do with 8-tracks. I do remember one though that I listened to that my parents had. It was a Best of Red Solvine tape. It was a bit meaningful since my dad was a long haul trucker now retired.

Great thread to start Gene! My earliest memories of an 8-track player: Growing up in rural NC, probably 8yrs old, riding with my uncle in his bright red '71 Ford Torino listening to George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Conway Twitty. I remember how cool it was seeing that illuminated "Program 1", "Program 2" , etc. light change in the car with each loud "click". I remember 8 tracks well, though they were already becoming a bit "old school" by the time I started getting into music and driving. We never had an 8-track player at home until I was nearly old enough to start driving (ca. 1981), yet for some reason we had a box full of Elvis 8-tracks in our closet as a "collection". Shortly before I got my license, Dad bought a thoroughly used '72 Powerwagon that had an 8-track player and a bunch of 8-tracks from the PO - I only remember two, one from Faces, and the other from Hendrix (the mention of "Are You Experienced" earlier sparked several memories). I remember picking up a Creedence (CCR) 8-track before I was able to ditch the truck and push home (literally) my first car - a '74 Datsun B210 that I got from a neighbor. Once I got it running it was WAYY better on gas for a teenager. Still, nothing like listening to Hendrix through a rattly, mono dash speaker, shifting an old Dodge truck "3 on the tree" on the way to High School. I'm sure other people at the time felt liberated by suddenly being able to CONTROL what they wanted to listen to while driving. After all, how many of us have our favorite driving tune? (another thread that's already here). That feeling of CONTROL is why people love Ipods, Satellite radio, etc. Remember when music stores used to be called record stores, and you could flip through 8-tracks like you flip through CDs now? I have kept the 8 track player that came with my Manta in the hopes of coming across some 8 track tapes so that I can show my 11 yr old son what they are and how they work. Amazing how fast time flies. And the old cliche of "the more things change, the more they stay the same" rings so true.

Another piece of trivia for 8-tracks. Anyone who regularly watches "The Simpsons" will know that Homer's car is equipped with an 8-track player. D'OH!

You find them in garage sales and junk stores from time to time. Check this site out.

You guys are nuts, I miss 8 tracks about like I miss a toothache. I think I'd sooner listen to straight AM radio than I had another 8 track. When my Pioneer started chewing up my tapes, David Bowie, Kansas, Styx, Jethro Tull, etc. Thank God my Monkees stuff was all albums and safe. I ruined them playing them way too much on a cheap turntable.

First 8 track I ever bought for myself (buying gifts for others doesn't count) was Black Sabboth - Sold our Souls for Rock and Roll....

Spent lots of $$ on 8-Tracks over the years due to buying my favorites more than once due to wear For instance I bought ZZ Top Fandango and Pink Floyd D.S.o.t.M 3 times each

First ever album I bought for my self as a youngster was the Beatles 1st Album.

On a side note, I've probably purchased Pink Floyd, Dark side of the Moon, more than anyother if you count 8 tracks, cassettes, albums, "Half speed Mastered" Album, and CDs.

I bought a Lear 8-track for my 1965 Karmann-Ghia Type-34 around 1968. And bought a couple of Glen Campbell tapes to play in it at the same time.
Ah, the memories.

Doesn't seem that long ago.

Still remember going to the Groton sub base with a buddy and picking up my first 8-track player, don't recall the brand and to dark to find it in the shed, and a tape to go with it - group call Frigid Pink. That would be late 1970.

Zeppelin 1 err from the local flea market for the ridiculous high price of 2.50.
Hey I was young at the time and didn't know anything about bootlegged music. That was allot of soda pop bottle returns, some stores at the time only gave 2.5 cents per bottle. Till this day whenever "Communication Breakdown" is played the volume is cranked up!
Hey what did you say sonny?

Is it bad that I can still remember the point in the middle of certain songs where the machine switched tracks? " Ahh, Supertramp, Breakfast in America, right about..... here."
First 8-track I bought was Kraftwerk, "Autobahn" back in 1974. Autobahn was a 22 minute song, I think it switched tracks twice in that one song! Still have it on vinyl. I also remember having Pink Floyd, "Animals" and Wings, "Venus and Mars." I have fond memories of family vacations driving cross country in my parents 1973 Lincoln with The Fifth Dimension and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass playing on the 8-track.

First 8 track tapes

The first two 8 track tapes I bought were Elton John "Honky Chateau" and the Grass Roots "Greatest Hits". I have an 8 track player in my 75 Manta but it needs a new belt put on it (a winter project) and I will be checking E Bay for some 8 track tapes!
