Opel Sightings

Had two guys stop by my shop today and inquire about Opels (I had a Manta parked outside). Turns out they're working on a '69 Opel GT for a customer, they're from Strong's Auto Repair on Sullivan Ave in South Windsor, CT.

They said they heard I know a little bit about them, and wondered if they could come to me for technical assistance if needed....

Hey, wow- I'm that customer! I brought my GT in there to have them get it running. I'm glad that they found you, any advice you could give them would be greatly apppreciated. I've had the car since 1985 but I'm just now investing more in getting it on the road. If I can help answer any of their questions about the car please let me know.
Other Opels sighted: 2 GT's on someone's lawn in Bolton, a blue one and a green one. I don't know if they're running.
Also, a blue GT driving by my street on Hillstown Rd. Manchester, about a month ago. It was in nice shape, and had stickers on the rear windows.

Don't worry...they didn't sound desperate or anything! They just said IF they needed some help they wouldn't mind a hand. I didn't see the GT, even though it's only 1/4 mile down the road. But I drive by their shop every day, so I'll keep my eyes open.

Turns out they know a mutual friend in my building, and he had recommended me to them two minutes after they saw the Manta. Small world.

That is some coincidence! Another coincidence is that the owner of that shop, Rich, is an Opeler himself. When I first asked him about fixing my car, he related a story of his youth about his mechanical resurrection of what became his first car, an Opel 1900 (wagon, I think.)

There is a great looking Manta On craigs list in Chehalish Wa. Looks like a great buy. I think they are asking $1000.

well i found out tonight there is indeed anthor opel on fort bliss, couldnt confirm if it was a gt or not but tonight when i came thru the gate the security guy asked me if i was driving an opel and i told him yes an OPEL GT, hes like well theres anthor opel on base here too, im like really hes like yes i think its an officer who drives it, im like well ill have to keep an eye out for it. so know i am interested to find out who this person is, and if they do indeed have an opel why they arent on this site. well once again i ask does anyone know of a opel in the el paso area?

There's this black GT that I see in my town, Simi Valley, every once in a while. It has the california body kit and this beautiful red interior. I usually see them parked outside T.G.I.Fridays though I think they might be a doctor at the Kaiser center across the way because there plates said something Doctory. I wish I knew who's it was so I could get some advice on how to restore mine. Anyone know who's it is?

I was driving east toward Bedford PA last night and saw a red GT exiting off I99 at exit 23. Curious to know if it's anyone on this list? It's always cool to spot an Opel unexpectedly!

I spotted an Opel GT - kinda???

There is a recent article (5/5/08) in the St. Louis Post Dispatch that features Charley and Laura Malloy's 1970 Opel GT.

STLtoday - Sporty Opel GT two-seater sometimes called "Baby Vette"

In the story the author says "If this story has enticed you to run out and pick up an Opel GT for summer ‘08 cruisin, you can expect to pay just under $10,000.00 for a show quality example...".

For JUST UNDER $10,000 I'll even deliver it!!

Okay, I just had to weigh in on a few Opel sightings in the movies...

1. Beverly Hills Cop- there is a yellow Kadett B wagon that has been used as an "expendable" parked car, gets slammed by the hijacked cigarette truck.

2. Used Cars- another yellow/tan/really nasty white Kadett B wagon is among the 250 used cars crossing the desert back to Phoenix.

3. Charade- Audrey Hepburn returns to Paris in a dove gray Rekord sedan.

The first one is the saddest. All concerned would have been better served had the money used to hire Judge Reinhold been applied to restoring the sad little B, and the truck had run over Judge Reinhold...

Well I was sitting back watching T.V.. specifically the history channel. It was the documentary titled Hippies. Although I admit I was around back then, I wasn't quite old enough to begin my hippie days until after the drugs were well introduced. anyway they were showing film during Woodstock and I caught some glimces of the cars back then. then up drives a got to be 69 GT as woodstock was in 69. Yellow of course. this was today 5/11/08. I am sure you'll will get a chance to see it as the history channel repeats things alot like everything on cable. first time for me on seeing one on cable Television. always looking. now it would be very interesting if the driver of that car was found. probably alive still unless the drugs got him or the war.

I found a white 73 GT with black interior on craigslist 5/25/08 (san francisco) for sale for $1800. I believe this is the car I owned about 10 years ago.

I also found a 73 GT blue with black interior in Sacramento, CA for sale for $1300. Car wasn't in running shape though.

Spotted another GT in the weeds. It is along the perkiomen trail, right near the Salford (formerly Salford Station) Pennsylvania Post Office. When the weather cools, I will go investigate.

Opelitis has struck again. This Opel was parked in '85 and has sunk down to it's axles, but it is now mine. There is not much left of this car, but I will remove the salavagable parts and scrap the rest. It also came with a new brake booster(which was stored in a barn).

Didn't actually see an Opel. But I did spot the trailer that Tom Adkins uses to move his Opel around in, and only a mile from my house. I doubt the car was in it. Looked like to me he lent it to someone who is renovating a Church.

In the movie 'Vantage Point', Dennis Quaid's character chases down the bad guys while driving a blue Opel Astra. Interestingly the movie supposedly takes place in Spain and the car clearly has Chevy bowtie emblems surrounded by a circle. Almost a 'faux-Blitz' emblem.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but in the Sci-Fi series "Ghosthunters", when they are in England, they are driving modern Opels.
