Thread: GM sells their history ?

    GM sells their history ?

In January, at the Barrett-Jackson-Auktion in Scottsdale, many vehicles from the GM collection are to be auctioned.

Crazy decision. Now they already sell their history...

According to the earlier article, it will mostly be SEMA cars and cars that have not been shown much. GM and Ford both buy cars that are simpily nice examples all the time, wouldn't be suprised if some of those cars were amoung them. I've seen them sell prototypes before though, not supposed to be driven on the street ever.

No mention of Opels in the GM Heritage Center Club Scene.
Corvair and Saab clubs are listed.

FYI - The auction is on Speed Channel right now and runs through Saturday. A couple GM Heritage vehicles have come across the stage already (a Hummer I believe and a Caddy). Interesting, the Hummer had a "salvage title" due to modifications that "might" make it non-street legal in some states.

They did this a couple years ago with some sema vehicles didn't they? I remember a truly ugly(orange with graphics-no offense intended to lovers of orange cars with graphics) cavalier that rolled across the block that wasn't street legal.

You're correct, Dirk. GM actually does this somewhat regularly as they sell off some examples and acquire others, like other collectors/collections. This year may be more cars than typical, or may have gotten more scrutiny given the economy and GM's financial state. Still, the GM Collection cars to be sold I've seen on the Barrett-Jackson website don't look to be "core" heritage pieces. Nice cars yes, but if you have 1,000 plus cars in your collection, I'm guessing you could trim a bunch and still have a great collection (just don't tell my wife I said that!).

Yeah, I was thinking that it got more press with the automakers in a spot financially, basically a non-story.

It looks like many are going to other museums. The Blackhawk Collection seems to be scooping up many at what looks like fairly low prices. So these cars may actually be more accessible to the public in the future.

I noticed that too which is a good thing. The commentators also made a point to mention that this has nothing to do with GM's financial woes. There are more cars in the lot for sale than in the past (220+ I think) but that is coincidental.

These cars are pennies compared to what they say they owe.
