Cash for clunkers
Okay first they are out of money, The house approved another 2 billion but the senate won't vote until next week.
The official rules are available at CARS.gov - Car Allowance Rebate System - Home - Formerly Referred to as “Cash for Clunkers” Your trade in must be no older than 1984. (8500 to 10,000 gvw trucks can be from '84 to '01) on a new vehicle purchase or lease. Your new vehicle cannot cost more than 45K. The trade must be driveable, registered and insured for the last calendar year. Limit of one per address. As for your trade....The dealer is allowed to keep $50 in salvage value only. They must drain the oil and replace it with 2 qts of Sodium silcate, which will sieze the motor. Then the vehicle can be sold to a salvage dealer only. There is a list of approx 7700 dealers approved nation wide. Anything but the engine can be sold. the vehicle must be destroyed within 6 months. So all they have really managed to do is do away with the reasonably priced used car. |

Its primarily an attempt to get rid of old worn out SUVs and Trucks.. as most reasonably priced old Hondas, Toyotas, Dodge Neons, Ford Escorts, etc.. don't qualify.

Keep your eye on this piece of crap legislation, just wait till you trade in your car. The dealer, as obligated, destroys the engine, and that is before you know whether you are really qualified for this deal, then you find out that your qualifications are rejected. Either you just ate 4500.00 or you bring the new car back. Remember your old car doesn't run any more. Remember that Obama and his administration want to manage your health care too. Pay close attention.

The political garbage needs to stay off the forums. My 94 Tbird doesn't qualify but my 94 Mustang does. That sucks cuz the Tbird just lost a head gasket but is still able to drive to the lot. ~L~ I'm not getting rid of the Stang. I'm second owner and it still only has 110K miles. Not bad for a 15 year old car. I agree that the plan seems to get rid of the glut of gas wasters out there. It's not, completely, unlike the legislation that was introduced under Jimmy Carter. The sad thing is the Carter era plan expired after 25 years and almost to the day the former president signed legislation that allowed a tax credit for vehicles over 6000 pounds. So those who bought the Hummers were given a tax break. All in all, though it is costing way too much money, and really not doing enough, it's not as bad as some plans. I would rather see the $4500 incentive applied to hybrids only, but thats a dream that wouldn't be realized.

Cash for clunkers
Official website is CARS.gov - Car Allowance Rebate System - Home - Formerly Referred to as “Cash for Clunkers”
My nephew has a 94 grand am that needs $1000 worth of work, it doesn't qualify either. 19mpg. My daughters '01 blazer does...she said something about having to pry her SUV out of her cold dead hands.....I don't think she's going to trade it in. Every dealer in our area is still waiting for payment from the government. They DO NOT have to destroy the trade in until they get the $$$$. Biggest problem, they can't sell you a new car because they didn't order any. GM & Chrysler Shut down and don't have any to ship. So sales are up on imports.... |
