Help finding an old thread
I need a little help finding a post I saw about 6 months ago. One of our members had Installed an A/C unit he had bought at wall mart by upgrading his alt. and useing a power inverter installed up by the battery to power the unit. After suffering thru last summers heat in Houston TX I am going to do this modification.the affordabilityof this mod makes it an ideal sullution to adding AC to my 73 GT. Thank you in advance for any help. tom |

Can't recall seeing that but the two systems that I've seen used lately are Aardvark's system in his silver Manta (an adaption of another system) and blancojp's system on Stealth (a hotrod set-up, combination of heating and air).

I'd ask the guy how well it worked out in hot weather.
The portable unit he said he used didn't come even close to the BTU requirement for even our smallish Opels heat loads on hot sunny days. IMO. There is no a/c shortcut to the way Juan or I did our cars. Jmo. I believe you'll want at least 10,000 btus for cooling a GT and more would be much better. A Manta would need probably 12-13,000 for decent cooling. The one I made up using new components is rated at 16,000 btu and seems to have plenty of capacity. I'll see if I can find his post.

http://www.opelgt.com/forums/group-9...y-opel-gt.html I don't see where he said he ever actually did it. He just proposed it. Like I said. I have about Zero confidence that unit and type of setup would work out satisfactorily. But I have been wrong once or twice in the past.

Take a look at Aardvaark's set-up.
I am now recalling a member who hijacked another thread. He was showing pics of his custom AC set-up but the thread was several pages long and was regarding another custom application like power steering or something. Can't find it, if I do, I think it needs to be broken off into another thread.

If you really want a good A/C system on your GT, follow or self customize the way I did it on mine. Believe me when I say plan it properly and you will be kool!

http://www.opelgt.com/forums/1a-star...upgrade-7.html Seems undersize particularly for the southern states heat, but the proof is in the pudding if it works well. ![]() ![]() Anyone know where he lives?

thanks
Thats the one Kent.Thank you everybody for helping me find these post.
Im hosting our Texas Opelers fall meet the 23rd and 24th of this month at my house in Livingston Texas.Their are some really talented guys in our group so Im going to get all their feedback and oppinions on this project and give it a shot so as to have an AC system for next summer.I figure the worst that can happen is that Ill have an extra ac for my storage shed and a really nice upgraded alt.on my 73 GT. If any of our neigbors are interested we will be holding our fall meet in Livingston TX.approx 80 miles NE of Houston on Hwy 59 the 23rd,24th and 25th of Oct.their are still a couple of cabins left at a cost of $15.00 per night, also some very nice waterfront motels around the lake at very reasonable prices. Should be lots of fun.(they always are)So if anybody has any interest and would like to join us please contact me. Tom Kaye Hm.# 936-566-5554 cell # 409-377-4044 e-mail- tcavk@yahoo.com |
