Annoying Whine Driving Me Crazy
At first I thought it was the transmission but I'm leaning in the direction of pointing to the differential as the culprit. Even though I have owned the car for quite some time I have driven it quite infrequently and know very little about everything Opel since I was caught up in other car restoration projects. I now want to make a sincere effort to put this problem to rest so I can enjoy the car the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Question: Does anyone concurr with the analisis of the rear end being the problem? Again, to be clear, the whine increases in pitch as acceleration increases. Are all internal parts available to rebuild the rear end? Are there specific differential parts that are more likely to be the cause of the problem? Does anyone know of a shop that could handle this rebuild? I am located in southern New York state in Orange County. Any help appreciated. Gary Panarotto |

The transmission or the rear end can cause the whine. Have you checked the gear oil in both? Is there a lot of oil around either that can suggest leakage out of the rear transmission seal or rear pinion seal? You may want try something like Lucas additive to see if that will quiet things down.

Does the sound go away when you lift off the throttle?
If it's a contant whine regardless of throttle load, but dependent on vehicle speed, it's most likely the forward pinion bearing needing replacement...a common issue on these cars, especially if the gear oil is a little low. If the noise increases with speed, but lifting off the throttle makes it go away, then it's probably a slightly worn ring and pinion. Excessive backlash will cause this noise. This can usually be adjusted via shims however. If the noise is more noticeable while cornering, then it could be an outer axle bearing. Example: If while taking a left hand turn the noise gets louder, then the right wheel bearing may need replacing. It would also increase with vehicle speed.
