The BCA (Buick Club of America) sure like to argue about Opel. I wonder if they realize almost all new Buicks are rebadged Opels.

My, my, what a lively discussion they're having over there. As usual, the old schooler's who only accept 100% made in America cars are butting heads with the modern thinkers who accept that we're in a multi-national car manufacturing world.
Myself, I'm torn between my German roots and being proud to own Germany's most successful inexpensive grand touring car and my American roots where I'm proud to own America's most successful inexpensive grand touring car. I don't know if that last half is correct, but it makes a nice sounding sentence. As far as car shows are concerned, one half of me is greatful that my car qualifies for the 60's-70's Foreign Car class and the other half likes that I qualify for the GM "Other" class that includes Willys and stuff.
"Get those damn kids off my car!"
Interesting thread. Thanks for linking to it.
It seems the core of their discussion is in defining what a Buick is. I didn't read anything disparaging Opels. But discussions of bloodlines in cars is about as hopeless as trying to make an argument for bloodline in people. I kind of see Opel as having been adopted by Buick, or at least foster parented.

I'm also an AACA member and can verify some of the members are very knowlegeable about most cars in general.
But more often then not many are clueless about any make other then what they may own or did own. And then some of them don't know that much.
Foreign cars are welcome in the AACA and my 1975 Manta is listed in the directory along with my 1963 Thunderbird. Might be the only Opel in it. ??? Never looked.
Maybe I should enter the Manta in an AACA show and force the issue some time.![]()

Indeed. Nice pics. I should post some, but our trophies sure don't look like yours.![]()
I did not want that post to make me out as pretentious, but a few years ago I attempted to join a buick car club, but to them I did not own a buick.
I wish you would post pictures also. Maybe swamp them with an overload even.

I read the entire thread. It didn't seem as though any official was going to step forward and grant us temporary acknowledgment let alone permanent. It seemed as though some members could agree that Buick literature and advertisement was enough of a reason to allow us, others disagreed whole-heartedly that since we didn't have a Buick marquee, Buick body or Buick power plant that we weren't allowed. Even the 76-on Buick-Opel was pretty much disregarded despite Buick-Opel badges and striping. They had nothing bad to say in regards to our cars just that it wasn't feasible to allow us entry or a unique division. Some argued that it would help waning memberships and some argued that they'd have to find knowledgeable judges for what might only be a couple cars a show. Honestly, for a organization who claimed to be in it for the comradery, it was counter-intuitive.
Needs a 2dr Ascona, everyone else has one.
Just got an email back from the people doing the August nights & they say we qualify just fine & they say 1972 & older north american cars. Well they've dropper enough chev 350s in the gts over the years.
Nice. Take lots of pictures.

Maybe if you show up with a 215 V8 or a narrow angle V6 they will let you in.
read 95% of it, and I notice they are arguing ownership of Opel..
They posted that literature with Opel - Buick written on it. Where I am, there are wierd dealers like that around here. Ive seen toyotas and mazdas next to each other, nissans and GMCs, all kinds of things. Wierdest one was the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/SUBARU dealer up in sun city!!
So does that make Subaru a chrysler product? No. Just is what the dealer buys to sell cars!
As an opeler I would side with the old buick guys. I dont see myself as a Buick owner I own an opel period. The fact that it was marketed and sold under the Buick dealership umbrella means nothing. That would be like ford cubs letting in SAAB or jags. They are not fords any more than an opel is a buick. They have there group of friend and car meets and we have our they way it was meant to be Good Opeling.![]()
I'm relatively new to this whole Opel scene, but it never crossed my mind to consider my GT a Buick. The same way I don't consider a Smart Fortwo a Mercedes (though the tie-in between Mercedes and Smart is probably as close or closer than that of Opel and Buick back then). The Fortwo might be made and designed by Daimler, but the intent of the car is not to further the Mercedes line of cars, but rather represents an entirely different concept of cars. To me it is the same way with the Opels, they were not designed with the intent/design language/characteristics of Buicks. If they were, they would have just named them Buicks.
Don't read this the wrong way -I have nothing against any of the car companies mentioned- but I think having distinctions between brands is beneficial more than detrimental. Cars are more interesting that way.
