VIN Decoder?

How come we don't have a VIN decoder yet? Anyone want to help make one for ourselves? I am up for it.

It is a script/program that you would pop your VIN# into and it would then tell you all the details about that car. Things like what its exact production number is and any options that were on that car, if available. As well as the year and location it was manufactured.

Also, it would indicate the engine, tranny, paint, rear-end, and some other stuff. I know there is a list on one of the Opel sites with that info.

For the past 6 or 7 years a few of us (in Germany and here in the U.S.) have been compiling a database of VIN numbers along with the various style change to try and determine when model changes ocurred. I have most of the list in an Access database.

I am trying to either contract the people who make the photo gallery to make a registry program or install an add-on to the Forums so members can add data on their Opels. (There is a promising hack that is in beta for the new forums program, but the sticking point is the fact that a lot of us own more than one Opel and that program only allows one.)

A lot of site upgrades and improvements are on hold until the new forum software is released. (Btw, it is getting close to release and it really kicks ass....) So we are basically threading water on site upgrades until it is released.

But making in a part of a forum might not be a great idea. You are then restricting yourself to that forum forever.

The other problem, I see is;

1. VIN's that have been installed on another vehicle to make it street legal.

2. VIN changes due to "quiet" titles, salvage titles, etc.

These and possibly more, would realy skew the results.

It really wasn't until the 17 digit/character VIN came out that a lot of the vehicle and it's options could be tracked. In fact, there are still some issues with such Optional items such as ABS and the like. The VIN will tell you if it was optional, but not if it is installed. OR if was installed aftermarket.

I'm currently working on a VIN verification/Year,Make,Model project for a client and even then, it's still hard to tell on the newer vehicles what is on the vehicle and what is not.

The data will be stored in its own database table. It will use the members profile or a separate form to input the data. Presentation of the data can then be in any format.

If you just plug in your VIN numbers to get a OEM read, it would be good enough. With no numbers but what you put in showing, no one will be able to "steal" a VIN set. A read-only d-base with only the OEM data used for the search, won't be of any concern as far as that goes. Kinda like the "Powerball" lookup database as far as input boxes. The data base simply reads it and displays what the numbers should be for that year.

Vin

There is no possiblity of a VIN decoder for these years of Opels because their VIN numbers just consisit of a two digit model number followed by the actual chassis number of car.
The front pages of the Buick/Opel parts book give the chassis number ranges for ALL models as the Kadett and GT production were all in the same range. It is only the model number which differentiates them. Similarly for 1900 and Manta.

Have a look at this post: http://www.opelgt.com/forums/77292-post25.html

and this one for 1973 and later: http://www.opelgt.com/forums/8349-post6.html

Your BRAIN is the best Opel VIN Decoder!!

The only thing I have that may be usefull is a word .doc it starts in 1957-1974 with two digits for model & type and then the chassis #
1975-1981 two digits model & type next digit model year next digit where the car was built following digits chassis #
And then it goes from 1981 and on until 1998, but it is in German.
I'll see if I can translate and post it some place [any place in particular?]
