Am I the only person alive that remembers Mustangs for the cheap rattle-traps that they are? I have owned several ponies; fastbacks, a convertible, Mach 1, the 68 flasher, 302 Boss Mustang II (there was a treat) LOL!~
I remeber not being able to GIVE my 64 1/2 away... If we only knew what people would get all sentimental about! Best wishes with your mustang! DirtTrackManta |

I can empathize with you. I built a 67 Mustang for Margaret's son for his graduation and was apalled at the very thin steel stampings for important things like suspension, bumpers, engine mounts, etc. My Opel, little as it is has stronger structure components than the Mustangs of the 60's. Oh well, the bean counters did it again.

A funny thing I noticed at the first Auto Fair I attended in Charlotte was that cars that we never, or hardly ever, see out on the streets were a dime a dozen there. Cobras, Mustangs, Cameros, etc. Masses of them. Opels? 5. So I'm lead to believe Opels are pretty rare. Heck, I have 5 Mustangs here in my small town, and up until the other day, I thought I was the only one restoring Gts or any Opels. I met a guy who runs a body shop in Eden who has 6 too, and has one in his shop that has a neat stripe along the bottom side that I've got to take a pictue of. Jarrell

You can make a GT blow the doors off of a mustang with the right mods. It's not about speed to me though, it's about style. I have never seen a car that I find to be more stylish than the GT, at least in the used <$100K range.

From what I understand, Gil's red GT can smoke most 5.0 Mustangs. There's also a guy in CA with a 3.4 (correct?) Manta that he had to change the rear out for a 9 inch FORD unit because it was too strong!

Gil has a severly modified GT. It has a 2.4L block crossflow head, dual side drafts, and a 5 speed. It needs 255's on the rear to keep traction, not to mention it is a work of art. His engine is worth more than ill ever put into my car.

Heck if the car looks fast, it had better back it up.

Gil's is expensive, but you don't have to dump that much money into one to beat a mustang. Given the power to weight ratio I am willing to bet even a mildly modified v6 in a gt would knock the doors off of most cars on the road.

140 hp (honest, not inflated!)
3.67 gears decent tires This in an Opel will beat 5.0 litre Mustangs (stock) left and right. I used to do it all the time. Out of the hole, in the 1/4 mile, and on the top end. Gil's GT has about 210-220 hp, it will put a serious hurtin' on more than just older Mustangs. Bob |

I have had 7 mustangs and two Opels and right now I have both in the driveway 67 mustang coupe and 73 GT. For the average gearhead the mustang is an easier car to work on, parts to make it go fast are easy to find and relatively inexpensive, just about any car can be made to blow the doors off of something else, it just depends on how much time and most importantly money into it. Enjoy your Mustang now and maybe in a few years you will find your drive to go and find another Opel, I love both of my cars and the Opel is a much larger headache but still fun to drive, my friends say that I must really love my it because I have gone through more aggrevation to keep it on the road then they would be able to handle.

Actually guys, you're kinda talking oranges and apples here. Willit? before the engine swap went faster than a CHP 5.0 Pursuit Mustang, I got a ticket for that, after I slowed down. But for stop lite to stop lite racing it is a different scenario. The difference is between what is quick and what is fast, and that's the reason for the Willit? engine/tranny swap, I wanna do or be both, quick and fast.

One thing the Falcon (Mustang) had was a marketing plan!
Opel GM, let's sell Opels through Buick dealers! The place my Grandfather buys his cars from!!!! I was 10 when I saw my first GT in 1969! Me and my Dad went to look at it, they didn't want to sell it, just get people in the door! Look over here what you can get for a little more $. My Dad bought a Buick Estate Wagon instead! Damn you GM! |
