What ever happened to the famous quote "You have nothing to fear but fear itself"? They are trading on speculation and fear.
Yes I know we are down on production and the loss of life is mind numbing but we must learn to conserve until the crisis passes and people are back on their feet. Lets help the people down south first. Donations are needed, just make sure you go to a legal site before giving your money away. Just my 0.02 worth. I will get off my soapbox now. Jeff

Was watching the news and saw a BP station in Atlanta post 5.99 per gal for premium.... The analyst thinks that it will top out closer to 7/gal. Speculation only... 7*14= $98/tank!!!! ![]() |

Last night at 10:20 PM driving home I saw $2.69/$2.79/$2.89 for 87/89/93 octane. This morning passing the very same station it was $2.99/$3.09/$3.19, and diesel was $3.09 as well. No panic yet, no gas lines or threats of running out. Just your typical New England price gouging.
Makes me glad I don't drive an SUV, that's for sure. Not looking forward to a winter of $3.00 to $4.00 per gallon heating oil in a 200 year old house. Time to start burning Opel parts maybe. Bob |

I hear that on the heating oil Bob. In the early 60s, in NoDak it cost me $175 each month to heat my apartment. That was the main reason I moved on base when I became elegible. Another thing that bugs me is the oil companies telling folks they have to cut down on gas production for winter heating fuel. Then I found out they get the same percentage of gas/heating fuel from each barrel of crude. Makes you wonder just what is in those storage tanks during the summer. Or is it like the car PR folks telling us the real thin sheet metal in their cars are crumple zones. Methinks P. T. Barnum was right!!

"Makes me glad I don't drive an SUV, that's for sure"
Thats what eveyone keeps saying to me. But even with these sharp increses they are only a big problem if you have a long commute. Right now I use about 15 gal a week, two weeks ago that was about $38, Right now thats about $45. So that means I get one less Crappymeal for lunch every week, probably good for me. On the upside I know that I won't drive as much as prices go up, probably good for the environment..... I need to get my GT going, it would be nice to get back to the 25-30 MPG range. Though somehow last week after replacing the O2 sensor, and cleaning the air filter (where I found the pipe leading up to it had been leaking) the MPG of my Denali jumped from 13 to 18, and I do about 90% stop and go. AND I found a gas station tucked away in an industrial park that has consistantly been 45 cents cheeper a gallon than the next cheepest in Chicago.

I had to borrow my father's Armada a while ago, and putting $60 into the tank really sucked, especially considering it wasn't empty. It gets about 12-15 mpg with 93 octane, so I guess I should be happy with my own mileage right about now. If winter wasn't coming in a few months I'd seriously consider a motorcycle just to get 45-50 mph. |

I was thinking about this today, I drive one or the other of 2 S-10s. A 97 with a manual tranny and a 4.3 or a 02 with auto and a 4.3. I finally drove the 97 enough to see what it gets for milage. It gets real close to 30 on the highway were the 02 at best only gets 19. BTW regular unleaded here is at 2.95 and holding pretty steady. Then again one of the perks of a company truck is a company gas card. I sometimes forget if I'm driving theres or mine when it's time to gas up.

Well here in the town that i live/work in gas today for 87 ranged from $3.19 to $3.49
and has been that way for 2 days now. Sure wish the oil companys weren't out to make such a big profit. Bubba |

In kinda retrospect, it doesn't really matter how much gas costs per gallon, no matter where you live. When the tank gets low, you fill it up, or you should anyway. I've had folks ask what mileage I get on the motorhome, and I tell them, I don't really know or actually care, I do the same as they do with their cars, when it gets low, I fill it up, AND PAY THE PRICE. Is it worth it? Well here's an example. The trip to OMC cost me $175 for gas, KOA was $154, food for three days, $25, I shopped at the commissary. Total was $354, about. So figure if I spent the 4 days at the hotel and paid the going price for food, I got off cheaper than most. I almost forgot, gas for Stephen's Jeep for chaufering me around, $40. So I still got a bargain. Now today, it may not work out that way, gas has been going up steady since then, but I may still get off cheaper, maybe.

Up and Up ...
There is no real question about what is going to happen, only a question of how fast.
Oil takes millions of years to create. The earth is a finite volume, and contains a finite (not growing) amount of oil. Locating usable oil is getting harder (easy supplies of rich crude have been found and uused up) making extracting the remainder harder and more expensive. The result: Continual rise in price (look at price trends over the last 30 years - from 40 cents a gallon to 3 dollars). Usage rate decreases due to cost pressure (some de-celeration of cost pressure) Eventual personal use rationing or limitations (happened in the 70's and the situation is more advanced now) Gradual legislation reducing or limiting private gas vehicle usage. Eventual complete elimination of private oil burining vehicles. Restrictions of oil usage to commercial use and then Government only (military cant operate without it - this will become a national security concern) Meanwhile, we will be scrambling to seek alternatives - fuels, drive trains, public transportation ... to address these. But many of these indirectly depend on oil (electricity is primarily created from oil) So will this happen over 5 years? 20? 50? 100? If you look around you can find some scientific projections. Lets just say that the overall averge of these is closer to 10 than to 100. And Im an optomist! |

also time to remember the acetone thread from a few weeks age
http://www.opelgt.com/forums/showthr...hlight=acetone i used it until 2 weeks ago when i sold my last on the road car and was getting 12 % better milage in town and 22% on a motorway/interstate just from adding 2 oz of acetone to every 10 gal of fuel (car btw was a ford mid size station wagon with a 2L twincam efi engine and auto box )

The first quarter profits for the big oil companies were recently released. What a shock - the refining and marketing profits of the big four oil companies have increased by a staggering amount over one year ago!
BP – up 165% Chevron-Texaco - up 294% Conoco-Phillips - up 44% ExxonMobil - up 125% ![]() |
