2008 Nationals Caravan...

This thread is to coordinate a time and location for all interested in caravaning from the Atlanta area to Charlotte for the 2008 Nationals in Charlotte, NC. All are welcome of course not just the Georgia gang.

Basically, I-85 is the main route so it seems like picking a spot along I-85 makes sense and then a time that everyone could be there. I am closest to either the Lawrenceville-Suwanee exit or the GA Highway 20 (Buford Drive) exit (Mall of Georgia). Is anyone further East than either of these two exits? If so, maybe we extend the meeting point further out on I-85. Of course, people can group in small caravans in other locations building to the final meeting spot. My proposal to start discussions is to make Lawrenceville-Suwanee or Mall of Georgia I-85 exits the final meeting spot for the group. I'll throw out 10:00am as the time to give those further West time to make their way there through rush hour traffic (or maybe avoiding rush hour traffic). Comments?

Matt

Matt;
Either one of those spots is near me, about 20-30 minutes from my house. Time is not a problem, whatever works for most people.

Time?

First - When do we wanna go? Roy told me that Friday basically wasn't a meeting day, unless we might want to park outside the ring. Somebody mentioned we want to go Friday early morning, does that make sense then?

I tried to get the Speedway officials to let us park our Opels in or around the track on Friday but they said that if they let us, then all the other 54 car clubs would want to do the same thing. I can certainly understand that.

BUT, the AutoFair is open from Thursday through Sunday and believe me, it would take four days to walk through the show just to see everything. So if you guys get up here early enough Friday, you could still go over to the show and see what's going on. You will not be disappointed.

Allow yourselves around four hours from Atlanta to Charlotte.

Of course I'm in, that goes w/out saying. For the time and location I'm completely flexible, so I don't want to throw in a monkey wrench in any other planning.

Mall of Georgia is very easy to get to as it is right off I-85 at exit 115.

OK;
This is how we're going to do this, we'll meet at 10 am Friday morning, just outside the Mall of Georgia. Most will be coming up I-85 to exit 115/GA hwy 20. This is the first exit after the I-85/I-985 split. You'll get off, go back under I-85 and go to the first stop light, turn left, then go to the next intersection that will allow a left turn and turn left again. This is only about half a block. You'll pass between two buildings, then there will be a big parking lot. This is where we will meet at 10am. We'll be right off I-85, and getting back on, as a group, will be far easier, as it's all right turns. You can preview the area/route by using MSN.com live search map, it even has a very close up "bird's eye view" feature. Look at this over the next few days, familiarize yourself. My cell number is 404-797-2759, and I always have it with me.

Gene,

If I follow, that is the Toys R Us / Borders Bookstore parking lot - just behind the Burger King - correct?

Matt;
I think so, I have never been over by that area of the Mall, I'm just going by the aerial pictures. I figure to meet just to the left of the Pier 1 building

Got it - with a 14 year old daughter, I feel like I live at the Mall of GA sometimes! That Pier 1 is right across the street from the Burger King, we are on the same page.

Keeping this up front, we're meeting at 10am just behind the Burger King. Come off I-85, go back under the Hwy, go to the first light, turn left, go to the Burger King, turn left again and we'll meet right behind the building. I posted my cell number which I'll have with me and turned on.

Either exit 17 or exit 21 in SC would be just about lunch time, roughly 11:30 if you leave promptly at 10, and 17 has everything from Wendy's to Hooters.

Either exit would also be a great place for me to meet up with you guys and caravan on up the rest of the way with you. If one of you guys can give me a jingle when you cross the SC state line I'll be ready to go and meet up with you there if you're stopping or not.
