Unanswered: No starters in Canada - it seems

Does anyone know where i can get a new starter for my 72 GT, napa doesnt have one in alberta, and all other checks at part stores have failed. Is there another starter from a different vehicle that would fit? Ive searched the forums and drawn a blank.
I know i can order one from the USA, but dont want to wait and pay all the duty and shipping charges.
So close to getting the car on the road...but dead in the garage for now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

I have a spare one or two, it'd have to be shipped from GA.

Appreciate the thought, but i think the shipping and customs would be outrageous. I will give you a holler if i dont get any other posts that may help.

Hoping to get a cross reference number so i can just get a new starter.

Thanks
Mike

No cross reference I'm afraid. Fits Opel only!

1969-1973 GT
1969-1973 Kadett
1971-1975 1900 Sedan (Ascona)
1971-1975 Manta

All with 1900 cc engine BTW. The earlier blocks (pre-'69) were different and had a 3-bolt starter...it won't fit the later engines!

Have you tried getting your current starter rebuilt?
I have had several of mine rebuilt over the years by the local auto electric shop.
good luck,
Kevin

Mike,

Alberta Generator and Starter Service in Calgary ( 4081 Ogden Road, 403-265-1010) rebuilt mine a few years ago. It was $135 CAD, and that included a new solenoid. You might give them a call.

Since then, I have bought another re-manufactured starter from the States and had it shipped up. I just looked back at my records, and on eBay it was $50 USD, and cost $26.35 USD to ship, along with a reman alternator. There is no import duty on car parts (NAFTA) just a $5 handing fee (if it comes via Canada Post) plus 7% GST.

I MIGHT have a spare, if you are interested. Give me a call tomorrow (Sunday June 4) by which time I hope to have had time to dig through my parts. My number is 403-239-4523

HTH

Thanks a bunch for the responses, too bad about no cross reference starters, but at least i know now. Didnt know there wasnt duty on parts...good to know, as far as getting it rebuilt, that was my next step. Im up in edmonton, and there are a couple of starter rebuild shops here, will call on Monday. And third, thanks for the generous offer, and I will give you a call tomorrow about the starter.
Mike

PS. Pardon my newbie inexperience, but HTH i dont know your first name or how to find it on the forum.

Mike,

Sorry, my name used to be in my auto-signature, but I might have deleted it. Look again in a minute and it should be back. "HTH" means "Hope That Helps" in web-speak

Mike,
I looked through my stash of Opel parts tonight. I found one starter that I "think" is surplus, but it might actually be the one for the SportWagon. It seems to have a different solenoid than the one for my GT, so I had better not be selling something that I would regret later. I am pretty sure I have another rebuilt starter somewhere, but it wasn't in the boxes I thought it was. That's what happens when one GT gets disassembled TOTALLY, and a SportWagon partially, and a bunch of "...I might need that someday.." parts get bought off eBay. And then a bunch of years pass by. I know I REALLY need to sort through everything I have, and probably catalogue it all as well. I seem to have bought a few items more than once....

If you can't get your starter rebuilt in Edmonton, let me know and I will take another trip through the parts boxes to see what I actually have.
