Unanswered: OTTO START in a VW?
My wife has a 59 Beetle with the old 6 Volt system in it. I looked at the wiring schematic and it looks like an OTTO START could be installed. Would it be an advantage to install one? Will the benefit be the same as in the Opel? |

Google Search indicates there is a 6V Relay:
Hella 6V Relay classicgarage.com - The Auto Enthusiasts' Source. Auto Parts, Tools & Accessories, Hella, Pertronix, Lucas, KONI E-mail us at help@classicgarage.com 6 Volt Relay. Hella Brand. Made in Germany. OE number for reference purpose only: 91/6-6V Hella 6V Relay HE-4RA002566-07$19.96 Might be interesting for 6 Volt VW Owners to read: VW 9 Prong Box Troubleshooting and Replacement If you have a 6v VW, it's harder to find 6v relays. The most suitable, readily available item is a 5 v Magnecraft/Struthers-Dunn relay from Mouser Electronics, Magnecraft W9AS5D52-5 and Mouser 528-9522-5, $3.50. This relay has sufficient DC contact rating for automotive use, push-on connectors, and a flange mounting. You will also need a 2.4 ohm, 5 watt resistor (Mouser 280-CR10-2.4, $0.60) to reduce the voltage to the relay coils, and some 0.187" (3/16") push-ons. otto start
We used to use a starter button from the local auto parts and #10 wire to bypass the selonid. This was back in the 70's when I worked at a Volkswagen repair shop.A relay would be better but the starter button was a quick fix and worked well.
