Unanswered: Wiper Motor Problem - 1970 Gt
If I remove the wiper motor completley from the car and hook a battery up to it, it runs fine (although it appears to be running slow). However, when I reinstall the wiper motor in the car, the motor turns about 3/4 of the way and then crawls very slowly thhrough what appears to be a "dead or slow spot" and then runs again until it gets to that same spot and then crawls again. This is with the swich on low speed. If I put the switch on high speed, it does basically the same think except instead of going slow past the "dead spot"; it stops completely and only goes past the spot if I repeated unplug the wires and re-plug them back in. The car is in neutral and the backup lights are not on. Also, when the motor gets to the "dead spot" it is drawing a ton of current and the alternator gauge is pegged at -30. If I use the foot pedal, sometimes it works fine and sometimes it acts the same way as when I use the switch. I have tried swapping wiper motors, but there is no difference.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

wiper motor problem
When you reinstalled the motor, were the wiper arm mech. attached? As in could the problem be in the arms beneath the dash and not the motor? Perhaps something binding, and holding the motor up?

Checks ...
The wiper motor is a conventional 12 volt DC brush motor.
Check the brushes and commutator for wear and arcing. Check each of the rotor windings for continuity Check the stator windings for continuity. Check ALL earths. Check the bearings for wear. The motor should cycle freely when directly connected to a battery - disconnected off the car's electrical system - or it (they!) has/have an internal problem. |
