Red face Unanswered: Blowing "F7" fuse

Hello all, first time poster long time reader. I have recently put the petronix elec. ignition and coil into my 69. They are both wired up and getting power when the key is in the run position, however it does not want to turn over. I noticed that everytime I turn the key the "F7" fuse(8a) blows out. I have looked for possiable issues to no avail. I have not tried to put a higher amp fuse in there for obious reasons.... Can anyone help... I need spark! Thank's to all in advance for any help you can give on this topic.

Did you JUST install the Pertronix, or has has the car run in between? Normally I would suggest you have switched a wire somewhere, but the F7 fuse (if you are talking about the far left fuse position) only powers the wipers, the horn and the back up lights, and has nothing to do with the ignition.

But the fact that the fuse blows tells me that you must have crossed a wire to ground somewhere. Did you run a bypass wire around the resister wire to the coil as is usually suggested, and perhaps connect it to the wrong terminal? The clear insulated wire (the resistor wire) is connected to the F5 fuse position, but to the non-fused side (same side that the power from the ignition switch comes in from).

And why doesn't the engine crank? When you turn the key to the "Start" position, are you getting power to the solenoid? Does it click or make any noise? Can you jumper the solenoid (take power from the central lug to the outboard terminal that lays flat) to see if the starter works?

More info is required to trouble shoot, so if you keep supplying answers, we'll keep asking...

thanks!

Pertronix is new and since I have had the car it has not run... but for 15 seconds an hour ago ~ and i followed the 12 steps to install the unit and sent the power wire directly to the fuse box.

The car turns like it wants to start. i was able to get spark out of the distributor but now it just fails to go all the way. it ran for about 15 seconds but once i moved the distributor just a little it quit. i have a gas can that is hooked up to pump and trying to pull fuel in the carb but the new clear filter does not fill up. I just have so mant little things that are going wrong they may add up to my problem.

I tried to answer all the questions that may help, please let me know if I forgot anything.

IF the car has a newer style transmission with an internal switch for the backup light and it is leaking it will blow the fuse if the tranny is in/or when shifted into reverse. The style trans that originally came in your car is mounted on the left/dr. side of the trans and is external.

I can vouch for that . My 71 GT kept blowing that fuse when I first got it until I figured out it was the backup light triggering the failure. I just disconnected the B.U. light switch until I was able to get a new one from OGTS.

I wouldn't worry about the clear filter not filling up. Mine doesn't fill very much at all on either of my cars when just idling. Both have fairly new pumps, and run just fine down the road.

You may want to try rotating the distributor opposite the direction you did when it quit, or even have someone else cranking while you turn the distributor a little bit in each direction until it starts/runs. Better yet, get a timing light on it while it's cranking and try to get the timing ball lined up with the pointer in the bell housing. Once it is running set your timing to spec.

It's not mentioned much in the threads on Pertronix, but your timing may change significantly when you first switch from points to Pertronix. My car would not start at all after I first installed the Pertronix unit, despite the fact that it had run perfectly on points and my timing was set to spec. Once I rotated the distributor a bit it started and I was able to get the timing set.
