It has been done before to integrate a custom made seat bench in the rear, but it is impossible to sit an adult in it, and there is virtually no leg room. I have seen one in Belgium or The Netherlands, where somebody fitted one seat in 90° to the others in the rear, with the third passenger sitting behind the driver and his feet behind the passenger. Child seats should not be a problem, you just lose the space that's left for luggage.

That's what Mantas, Asconas and Kadetts are for. They have backseats. Though there's not a whole lot of room in the back of those.

A GT review I have from an old magazine happened to be done by a couple who took the GT on a weekend trip while traveling with a small child. They note in the review that they were able to strap a car seat on the package shelf between the two front seats and that some room was left over on either side for a small bit of luggage. Then again, this was 1971 and car seats today sure seem a lot bigger. The couple also noted in the review that once their child outgrew a car seat, the GT would have to go or they'd have to get a second, larger car.

Rear seat
Thanks very much for the advice, I really am only looking to seat my 2 year old and new baby in the rear (without the gear). Is that the only space for luggage? I am without a clue as to the idiocycracies of the GT. I just like the look of them and have always wanted one since I saw one in Germany in 94. Trying to get hold of one in Germny at a fair price is pretty hard.
Thanks again Per Ardua Rockape02 |

as the rear "luggage" shelf is made just for that ask your self one thing
could you live with the consequence's of what could happen to your young children if in a crash when in an area of the car that has no true use than to carry stuff ? would you carry them in the boot of any other car ? the structure in the rear of a gt would need a lot doing to it before i would strap a kiddy seat in it

There is a small amount of luggage space next to the spare tire but with a spare tire, its very little space.
It is possible to fit 5 teenagers in an Opel GT. I wouldn't say it was comfortable, nor safe, nor legal, but it was done one night. My honest opinion is that an Opel GT is not a good car for a car seat. There just simply isn't enough ways to be comfortable and keeping the baby safe at the same time unless its just one adult and the baby seat in the passenger seat.

As a few folks have pointed out, the rear area was NOT designed to accommodate a child seat, and there is precious little luggage space aside from that space. If you aren't carrying any other luggage aside from the children, then there is space for two smaller car seats. But you would have to do a very proper job of mounting rear seat belts and tether straps, or else the child seats will become little bouncing projectiles if you are ever in a crash
