Unanswered: Opel Expert Coming to US for vacation.

It is a pleasure to announce that Uwe Klippert, a veteran and a bit of an expert on the restoration and enhancement of Opels, is coming to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for a visit with his family. Uwe is the author of the website: Homepage . He and his family will be in the area from the 18th until the 24th of August. For those interested in a early dinner or afternoon gathering on the weekend of the 22nd-23rd please post up or PM me to discuss a meeting location.

By vocation Uwe is an automotive design engineer with the Brose automobile systems firm in Germany. He has operational designs in current production GM automobiles. Over the last 15-20 years Uwe has acquired and restored a number of Opel GT's, Mantas A & B, as well as, currently owning examples of the Bitter CD and SC Coupes. All or most of his creations, including a convertible Manta A may be seen at his previously named website.

Additionally, Uwe has created several upgrades for some of the shortcomings of the Opel Manta. One such creation is a set of inserts for the Manta window guides, eliminating the excess movement of the glass in the window track. Some at this site have installed these I believe.

Meeting time and location.

The proposed time and location is the Grapevine, Texas location of the Salt Grass Steakhouse. The Salt Grass is on Hwy. 114 and Main Street in Grapevine. The exact address is:

102 State Hwy. 114 East
Hwy. 114, exit Main and turn left at light
817/329-1900

As for timing, should we say about 5:00-5:30 to avoid a crowd and allow plenty of travel time to and from for those wanting to attend?

Any other suggestion for a time or place?

Thanks,

David

Lightbulb E-mailed Uwe yesterday re . . .

. . . a bit more detail of his stay and plans for time in DFW area. Will let everyone know when he answers. Have suggested breakfast Saturday morning at Morning Maniacs get-together at La Madeleine in McKinney, ~08:00-10:30 or so.

Local club meets there every Saturday morning, lots of old Americaon Iron and some Euro cars show up, usually around 30 or so. We'll see what he says about this and it may be just him and his son for this one, so we'll need to perhaps make arrangements for their transport in this case. Don't know where he's staying, so all is conjecture until I hear from him. Will let you know . . .

Arrow Just received . . .

. . . e-mail from Uwe and here's the details direct from him . . .

My cell number is: *** **** **** ***
Hopefully it will operate in the US. The registration is in Germany. Probably calls will be expensive for both. I am considering to buy a prepaid cell in the US. I will let you know.

David has arranged a meet with several other guys on Saturday late afternoon, details are on opelgt.com

We can meet in addition on another if you like. So far we did not make detailed plans for every day. I am free on each day. We will have a rent car and I can come to visit.
Didn't know if he wanted his cell listed here as it's German and expensive to use here for both sides, as he said. I've already replied with some more details about the Saturday AM breakfast meeting with Morning Maniacs and pointed him back to this thread for links, etc.

When I know more, you'll know too . . .

They're here . . .

. . . talked with Uwe yesterday late and everyone - he, wife, son - 13, daughter - 10 - arrived OK but tired, seems they "had to" get to the Frankfurt airport two hours before direct flight to Dallas "so they wouldn't miss the flight!" . . . sounds familiar, though not recently.

He wants to go to the Saturday Morning Maniacs breakfast and planned dinner, but we'll chat details a bit today. Just thought it worth a quick update for everyone . . . will let y'all know.

That sounds all too familiar to me. Our last night in Munich I stayed out and played with the Opel guys until 10:30 pm. Woke up at 3:40 am got the family ready to go to the air port, 4:30 left the hotel, drove to air port, returned rental car, checked baggage by 5:10 for our 7:10 departure.
I guess I COULD have gone to bed early like the rest of my family and miss riding in the 240 HP GT......Nah.

. . . actually meant that early airport arrivals were more of a spousal unit necessity! . . .

David and Otto,
Thanks for setting things up! I'll definitely make the afternoon since we can head on to Dallas from there. I'm still not sure about the morning one... that's early for a saturday...

Anyways, in the evening if anybody would care to join my wife and I, we're going to a Burlesque show! It's at the pocket sandwich theater on Mockingbird and 75 at 11:15 at night. We've been going to several shows and they are a lot of fun! And this weekend it benefits breast cancer!

. . . and I mean that in the kindest way . . . NOT!

Alfred, seriously, bring your GT, wife and camera along to the Morning Maniacs gathering Saturday early, you'll be happy you did! I realize it's a ways for you two, but Uwe is staying in the arts district in Fort Worth and he's coming for sure. Last I remember, FW is farther away than Arlington . . .
