Unanswered: Stabilizers

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if all GT's have the same set-up and configuration when it comes to stabilizers?
Please see attached pic. Number 8 & 5 is missing on my GT,and can't find any fastening points on the rear axle/chassis for the rear stabilizer (8), nor can I find no 1....

Thanks for your help!

Frank

Front Sway Bar (1) and Rear Sway Bar (5) were not installed on GTs scheduled to be imported to the U.S. The Panhard Rod (9) was installed on all GTs. It was installed on a stud welded to the rear left of the differential and inside a bracket welded to the body above and to the rear of the differential on the right side of the body. HTH.

Thanks for the information!

Is it a good idea to buy these and fit them, and have anyone experience with driving with and without these stabilizers?
And yes, mine is a US car imported to Norway last year.

As far as I know, ALL European GT's came from the factory with a rear sway bar (also called an "anti-sway bar", what you are calling a "stabilizer"). A few slipped into North America with them. Some early GT's came over with the attachment points on the differential but no bar. Most North American GT's do NOT have the Factory rear sway bar attachment points welded to the differential housing (where #8 attaches to the differential), which I suspect is what you have, so this style of sway bar (from a Euro GT or the kit from OpelGTSource) cannot be used unless the proper brackets are found (a bit rare) and welded on (a bit hard to do). All GT's have the required holes for the rear sway bar mounts to the body (#'s 6 & 7) right from the factory.

The front sway bars shown, AFAIK, were an option ONLY on the Euro GT's, and NEVER found their way onto North American GT's from the factory. That particular style requires a mount attached to the front Lower Control Arm, which was standard on many (maybe all?) Euro GT's, but again , not on the North American GT's. But a piece of angle iron can be bolted or welded on that will work.

Most folks buy the Adco aftermarket sway bars, as they are easier to mount, especially the rear bar. As for "is it a good idea?", yes, both bars make a big improvement to a GT's handling.

I think OGTS sells the brackets that need to be welded to the rear end.Actually I'm waiting for the addco anti sway bars to come in right now.The OGTS bars are heavier duty than the addco ones but the addco ones are much cheaper & easier to install so I've been told. All work well.Let us know if you notice a difference when you get them in .

Keith,

Thanks for a in detail explanation, it’s much appreciated
I know parts for this can be bought from the GT shop in Suselbeek, but due to long (and very long..)delivery time, I think I’ll go for the GTSource in the US, they have delivered parts to me in a very short time.

My GT is an american spec, but when I changed out the rear end(the car's, not mine), the scrap yard one I got had the brackets on it. I got the front and rear swaybars from OGTS and it is a night and day difference. I run stock tires(165-13's) and the car rides like it is on rails now.

So to answer your question, yes, it does handle differently(better) with the sway bars attached.

I also updated my front and rear suspension with poly bushings which also tightened everything up.

HTH
