DOT-3 was the brake fluid that our brake systems were actually designed for (since the FSM recommends the Delco Supreme 11, which is DOT-3). But DOT-4 is an "improved version" of DOT-3, same glycol base, higher boiling temperature, so they can both be used with no ill effects, but they should not be mixed!

I found this out too the other day. I used synthetic in the Brown Gt, but I replaced everything from the MC, (new, you could still get them then) back, including the rear wheel cylinders. Note, you can not use the synthetic or mix the two. So on the next one, I'll stick with Dot-4 rather than having to keep 2 different brands of brake fluid on the shelf.

I believe you are correct on some of the earlier formulations as I remember going through a flushing process before switching to a synthetic, but.....

DOT 3 & 4 Brake Fluid

things have changed. This is just one brand. I don't know about the compatability of others. I was looking for Castrol Dot 4 and came across the Valvoline Synpower fluid in AutoZone.

Very true Harold. I rebuilt the Brown Gts system 4 years ago and "flushed" all the lines at that time. I use the Valvoline Synpower fluid in all my other vehicles.
