Unanswered: rear brake adjuster

Sorry if this has been posted before but i didn't find an answer using the search function. I just replaced all the brakes on the rear and put in a new pinion seal and donut (what a pain). When i loosend the adjuster the passenger side front adjuster just broke off. I was curious if there is a way to fix it or do i need to put on another backing plate. I already have a spare rear end so it isn't a huge deal just hopeing there would be an easier way. If not do i need to pull the axle to change the backing plate out. Thanks in advance.

I think you're going to have to replace the backing plate. This is the first time I have ever heard of one breaking off.

Could be a lesson to us all to blast that adjuster with Liquid Wrench before we tear things apart. First time I've ever heard of that happening also.

I have one plate where the spring washer under the head split in half and now the adjuster just sort of flops around in the hole, but to break off a head yours had to be really rusty, that's a pretty larger diameter to shear. The short answer to your question is YES, you have to replace the backing plate, make sure the one you have is the same style, that is old (rear with retaining rings on the axles) vs. new (rear that uses the 4 bolts at the axle end to retain the axle).
