Unanswered: stiff brakes....

So as well as many of my friends, I noticed that it takes a lot of force to push down on the brakes...... also when I hit the brakes the car starts to idle lower.... I checked the one way valve and it works, I also changed the hose that connected it but it didn't make a difference..... do the brakes need to be bled? is the booster bad?

Is this an automatic or manual trans? Usually when idle is affected its a vacum issue......One time I accidentally put the check valve in backwards and the brakes were VERY hard and pretty much non exsistant. HTH

How old are the brake hoses?
These little cars didn't stop very well even when new IMOA.

Its a manual trans and I think the brakes are the originals but it does look like some of the lines are new.... I checked the one way and its on right.... and I think the leak is from under my carb.... How do I check the brake booster? I heard some are dangerous to take apart....
thanks

An easy way to check your brake booster. With the engine off, pump the brakes a few times. With your foot pressing on the brakes Start your car, the brake pedal should travel down a little bit more. If it doesn't your booster is bad. Brake boosters are not serviceable and should be replaced.
