Unanswered: How to know what engine I have??

On the exhaust side of the engine in front of the engine mount there are a pair of numbers on a 1.6 S they read 16, on a 1.9 N & 1.9 S they read 19, on a 2.0 N they read 20, now my question what should the 2.2 engine have as numbers??
the 2.2 engine reads 20 while the tag on the other side says 22 E and the engine #.
Do the 2.0 and higher have 20 on the side, or do I have a 2.0 underblok that has been worked on to be a 2.2 with a 2.2 head??

CIH Engine numbers

The 2.0 and the 2.2 both use the same block, the 2.2 just has a longer stroke crank, therefore I believe both blocks have 2.0 cast into the drivers side (left) of the engine. This also may apply to the 2.4 but I don't know as I have never dealt with one.

Opelnut has it right!

The 2.0 and 2.2 blocks are the same casting. The difference is only in the pistons, crankshaft, and the stamped number on the ID tag.

The 2.4 block is indeed a unique block to that engine only.

22e

The stamped on "22E" in front of the engine number identifies it as a 2.2 litre motor.
Same block as the 2.0 ... same casting even. The 2.2L motor only used in about 1984-86 mostly in Opel Records and Vauxhall Carltons and it is the rarest size.
