Unanswered: 72 engien swap into 70.. bad idea?
If i'm not mistaking the 72 had a low compression engine due to different pistons? (or due to what?) and had all the emissions along with it that i would be tossing (assuming it's that easy). Would I feel a huge difference in performance if i just plain swapped in this low comp. engine,? Perhaps if re-usable I could swap in the 70 pistons to bring the compression back up or would this interfere with other things? my idea of an engine swap would be to improve performance not downgrade. Give me some of your ideas please |

72 engine in 70 GT
The 72 engine will go in the 70 without a problem, just use your 70 intake & exhaust manifolds and the 70 distributor. You will see a decrease in HP as the 70 was 103 and the 72 is 85. However you will be getting a 4 bearing head, if the 70 motor was tired you won't notice that big of a change. If it was ran low on oil and locked up it mostly likely spun a rod bearing, in which case the rod is toast and the crank will need machineing at the very least the pistons may be usable. I would put the 72 motor in it and ride while I built a flat top motor with new bearings and rings along with redoing the head with harden valve seats for unleaded gas. If you bandaid it you may find yourself without a ride for awhile (IMHO)
