Unanswered: Extra hole in 1.9 engine in front of dpstick hole

I just got a 73 GT with a stock 1.9 which has a hole in the left lower front section of the block appro 8" n front of the dpstick. The hole is currently plugged. Does anyone know what this hole/port is for?

Thanks
Bob

So you can have a second dipstick, of course. And if you get an oil pan with a dipstick in it, you can have a third. It's like winning the lottery!!

OK, so I'm being fecetious but the extra hole really is for a dipstick but not on your car. It is used if the oil pan reservior is in the front of the engine. I have never seen a front reservoir pan and don't know what car would take it but I was told they exist a long, long time ago.

In reality, most recently . . . believe front sump CIH pans were used on later, post-'75, front drive models . . .

I knew my grammar in that sentence would bite me in the butt.
Should have read..

"I was told, a long long time ago, that they do exist."

It was the 80's. Wasn't that a long time ago?

One hole is for the aluminum pan the other is for the steel pan if I'm not mistaken.....
And I'm not positive...but I think the later year blocks only had the second hole, not the early ones.....

Hate to correct you but the aluminum pans (as far as I know) all have a dipstick tube built into the pan.

I have an aluminum pan from a late 80's Opel Rekord. It doesn't have a disptick tube built in the pan. It fits the 1.9 , 2.0 and 2.2 engines but can't be put in a GT because the front suspension crossmember is in the way. It's a pity because the pan is truly a work of art.

I can't remember any fwd Opels with the CIH engine, the fwd Kadett D used either the OHV and OHC engine as did the Corsa, the Ascona C used the OHC only

I'm guessing the front sump pan is from the Blitz truck ?

That driver side dipstick hole in the block is actually the main stream solution. It was used already in 60's in Rekord and later in 70's & 80's in Manta, Ascona, Rekord in CIH engines with steel pan.

Propably CIH Kadett B and CIH GT were the only ones using aluminium pan with bowl in the back and dipstick & hole in the pan itself.

I maybe cutting some corners with this statement but the main message is there...
