Unanswered: Labor to replace engine
I teach an Auto Technology class at a high school in Southern California. One of my students has a 72 GT/ manual transmission with an engine problem (bad compression in #2). It also has factory air. We are planning on removing and rebuilding the engine. I've never worked on one of these cars before. It looks pretty packed in there under the hood. What am I in for? To give me an idea, what does the book pay in HOURS OF LABOR to R&R the engine in one of these puppies? Thanks to everyone who would like to give me their helpful advice! Sincerely, Steve Storey |

Steve, Labor hours, I don't have any idea what the "book" calls for. A lot of members on the site claim to have removed the engine in 1.5 hours. I don't know if that includes draining the fluids or not. As for the AC, if you have the GM compressor mounted above the alternator, you don't have to disconnect the hoses. Just remove the compressor and lay it aside, secure it from moving while the engine is being removed. There are pros and cons about how to remove the engine, the manual recommends removing the engine/tranny as a package from under the car. Others recommend removing the head and just pulling the engine leaving the tranny installed but supported to keep from contacting the ground. One thing for sure, you'll need a manual either way you remove the engine. HTH.

1993 prices
In 93, my opel had an engine replacement at opelgt source.the mecca of opeling parts.
the labor was $800, which included sealing , re gasketing, cleaning and painting the replacement motor. parts such as gaskets were extra. the beauty of the opel, is it is easy to work on, for those who do engine rebuilds etc.

after pulling a few engines (first at age 15, now am 17, doing it more than i like to admit) you can drive it in the barn and have the engine on the floor in about 2 hours, keeping the engine complete and just disconnecting the exhaust and removing radiator, alternator, and other such things. i have done one out the bottom, which seems to be the preferred method of the group, keeping the trans and engine as 1 unit. i seemed to have a little more difficulty removing it from the bottom, but be because it was my first time......theres a thread if you use the search function of the forums with a lot of posts describing in depth pros and cons of each way and little tips and tricks to doing it each way.
