Unanswered: Double Pulley on a 70GT?

Looks like Christmas vacation from College, the GT gets some help. Hmmm, wonder what this double pulley is for. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It's to run an AC compressor.

Double pulley.

Depending on the year of manufacture, it could be for an A/C compressor or the Opel Emission Control System (OECS) air pump. That system was discontinued in 1970 I believe.

Liz;
See if there's fittings on the top of each exhaust where it bolts to the head. Those are fittings for the emissions system Dave McCollam was talking about.

I knew there were two kinds of pulleys manufactured. The history is great! Also being able to tell the difference between the two would be nice. What year was the air conditioner pulley manufactured?

Ara & Gm

The a/c units were not factory fitted - they were put on by the Dealers and so could be fitted to any year even after the car had been sold.
Early on the so called "ARA" unit was fitted but later (1972ish ?) GM produced their own kit which had much taller air vents.

If my memory is correct this one had AC and the tall center console went to Tim. I've never seen a GT with the air pump in any year.

Tim got the air stuff out of the 71. This one is the 70, thats why I was a little suprized. Still don't know if its for air conditioning or emissions yet tho, this car doesn't have remnants of either in it.

The pully in the picture looks like the one I have. Mine is from a '74 Manta with A/C which now resides on my GT(the pully, not the AC).

Cool! So I take it the double pully is one for the air pump. How much do you want for it? Send me an e-mail OK, lets talk.

Except to a true collector of original parts. My curiosity was truly for the historical events and the differences between the pulleys. Most interesting!

GT air pump?

True, the air pumps were only used on the '68 models and, even then, somewhat sporadically at best.

Yeah, that's what you said ~2 years ago . . . must be one of those rare 'phantom' air pumps . . .

(Quote from Dave on the first page, where he thought the Air Conditioning stuff came out of Kats Car)Then you replied on # 18

Otto; Dave remembered wrong! The air stuff was taken off Lisa's 71GT. This one that the double pulley is on is Kat's GT. Dave never saw either one of these GT's in person. I'm still in question which pulley this one is for? Kats GT has no carbon filter, but does have a bunch of tubes I don't recognize!

Pulley function in first post:

To paraphrase and recap what I said in IM, charcoal canister was only used in '73 GT. '73 GT was only year for electric choke, all the earlier years had water chokes.

In general, most GTs, with a few exceptions, came with mechanical secondary Solexes. All other models, again with a few exceptions, came with vacuum secondary Solexes. '68-'72 CIH Opels came with water choke Solexes, '73-'74 came with electric choke Solexes and all '75 models, 1900s and Mantas, used Bosch L-Jetronic FI.
