How much would cost to rebuild a 4 speed transmission?

Define rebuild...

The parts are becoming scarce for a true rebuild of a 4 speed Opel trans. You can buy the synchros (however the hell you spell that) and bearings and seals, but buying new gears and such is tough, so having many used trannys to pick from helps to build one good one. I had a few factory kits with all the bearings and such, a few other odd and end shafts and gears NOS, but I guess if you come into having a bad one, we usually just find another one and start from scratch. I can build you a tranny, and have the parts used, but it is still a used trans.

Just a point
The Chevette trans had the same input shaft(4th. gear) But had a larger main shaft.
If my memory serves me correctly and thats a big "IF"

An Indication

1) Replace main bearings; seals and gaskets - $200 to $300

2) Replace the above plus synchros; small parts Kit (needle bearings, lay shaft, thrust washers); rear sliding bearing - $500 to $700 depending on parts cost.

3) Complete to new specs rebuild with mainshafts, shift forks and gears replaced - $2,500 might get it done ... if you can find ALL the parts.

BTW: A perfectly usable 2nd hand gearbox costs $50 to $150 plus shipping.
OR a Getrag 5-speed good 2nd hand from OGTS used to be $550 to $800 depending on how may extra bits for fitting it you get.

That is why people get used 4-speeds ... or buy a Getrag.

For this price I presume Jim is quoting labor as well. I just went through the refresh process on a 4 speed myself about a month back and the total for parts... 2 bearings, all gaskets and front and rear seal was just under $100 for parts... my labor to install was free...

Synchros can be bought individually from OGTS, but they are costly. Do some shopping on ebay.uk and you may find an entire tranny rebuild kit that includes all the small parts... The hardest thing to find are shift forks...
