Unanswered: What am I missing?

In order to shift into first, second, or reverse, I have to raise the slide on the gear shift lever to move passed the stop. I don't have the problem on my '72 GT parts car transmission only on the '71 GT. The gear shift levers look the same on both cars. What am I missing?

Searched but could not find where anyone had posted this problem.

LOL, shifter is in backwards. Pull the shifter boot up, pull out the pin holding the shifter in, turn the shifter 180 degrees and re assemble. The lock out is for reverse only

Tried that, no go. The slider gate is then on the wrong side as is the hole for the spring.

The 71 and 72 gear shift levers are identical and both provide proper shifting in the 72, neither works in the 71. Does the horizontal slide rod (into which the gear shifter is fitted) or the gear linkage have to be in a particular position when the shifter is installed? Is there any difference between the 71 and 72 transmissions? It seems so simple, but very frustrating!!

That would have been the problem if it was my shifter. I probably would have five broken reverse gears, and one forward gear...

Denny,

I am watching this with interest as I have a similar problem. I recently bought a 70 GT, but my problem is the opposite. I can shift into any gear including reverse without lifting the lock. Also, the shifter that is in this 70 I bought, is about twice as long and is bent at a 90 degree angle. I took a shifter out of another 70 GT I have and tried to install it, but no go. If I get it in, it will not move. Very strange. I figured all the GT shifters were the same.
