Unanswered: taking apart gauges

over time i seem to have acquired several non-functional instrument panel pieces (clocks, gauges, speedo). i wanted to take them apart to seem if there are any repairable parts inside but i can't figure out how to separate the can from the chrome ring and glass without tearing them up. anyone done this before??

Patience, and pry the ring up all the way around with whatever you have. I used a small screwdriver and a dull butter knife.

Jeff has it pretty close, on Willit?, I started with a very small flat jeweler's screwdriver and went all the way around the inside of the chrome ring, then went to the next larger size, continually pulling the ring away from the instrument with my hand. The rings would finally pop off with no noticeable damage and would go back on the instrument without the need to crimp them back on. You just have to be careful and use a lot of patience.

And on the gt, mind the glass, because it really is glass. When I took mine apart, after carefully prying the chrome ring, when it finally popped off, the glass fell on the floor and shattered
