    Lightweight AC compressor options?

My 75 Sportwagon's A/C compressor leaks at a seal on the compressor. It appears to be a Sankyo-style although there are no markings.
Are there any small light-weight recommendations for replacement compressors.
The bracket is on the passenger side of the engine and mounts to the block with three bolts.

    Paul,

The shaft seal is not that difficult to replace. There's a carbon to ceramic seal along with an o-ring, that's it. Back in the R-12 days these were cheap and easy to purchase and just as easy to install. Now-a-days. you just have to find a repair shop that won't stick it to you.........

I agree, just have the front seal and o-rings replaced.
    And switch to 134A.
Just had my GT's done, it cost me $60.
Mine has a Suzuki Samurai compressor, that I made custom brackets for.
    Working great now!

Yep, thats the one I used.
    Single v pulley.
I made an "alternator type" bracket that pivots on the bottom ears and a bracket to the top ear to tighten the belt.
It mounts on the passenger side.
    See " A/C console" thread.

The GM AC compressor was mounted on the drivers side of the GT on top of the alernator and dissy. The other brand, which excapes me right now, (senior moment) was mounted on the passenger side, below the "frame" rail and mounted partially to the water pump. It was in close proximity to the oil filter, and caused a few problems.

Opel A/C, "dealer-installed" US market option

. . . partially correct. First, two distinct A/C systems were offered for all Opel models, GM and ARA. Both A/C systems were "dealer-installed" options, specifically added for the US market.

All ARA A/C systems used a York 2-piston, "vertical-twin" type compressor mounted up midway, passenger-side and directly opposide the WP's lower radiator hose. This required an ARA-specific, 90° cast aluminum coolant duct to clear the compressor mounting bracket.

All GM A/C installations used GM's venerable, but very large and heavy, A-6 (6-piston, swash-plate) compressors mounted up high, driver-side on the GT and Kadett and down low, passenger-side on the Manta and 1900/Ascona, the compressor's front edge very close to the oil filter.

It was this Manta/1900 compressor installation which caused the problem of "holing" after-market, larger-diameter (too large) oil filters. GM's "A/C Installation Instructions" specifically cautioned that only the "stock" oil filter #7965051 (smallest diameter) should be used with A/C equipped Mantas and 1900s.

Thanx for the clarification, Otto. I've never seen or worked on anything other than a GT with AC, so I'm not too swooft on the other models. This early in the a.m , and still working on my first cup of coffee, I should have said the ARA system pump was also mounted to the water pump housing. Regardless, I found the GM system was mush easier to work on than the ARA, at least on the GT.

    a/c

well thats my mistake ive been in iraq working on humvees too long i meant the a6 compressor thats mounted right there above the rod that goes to the brake booster i had the compressor there for a while but my lines started leaking so i removed it to save some weight and make it a little easier to work under there, well what im asking i guess is if theres a way to mount that subaru or similar type smaller compressor were the old a6 one was at? these damn humvees use an a/c system almost like our gts they have the compressor up front and everything else is in the back worst thing about it is they put the damn fans for the condesor right under the wheel well so we keep smashing them when we hit big bumps. thats the goverment for yah.

Hey Otto, thanx, I really needed that. It gave me a chuckle, when I sat down and read it. Especially after starting Willit? and found out that I have to pull the AC brackets again, for the umpteenth time. Gotta call my friendly welder and add some metal to one of the brackets. At least now the belt doesn't jump off the pulleys. I just gotta move the adjuster back about 1/4" inch and all should be well with the world. Thanx again for the respite and levity. I truly needed that.
