Answered: Complete A/C System
I bought 3 GT's to build the one I have now and none of them had a A/C system in them. So I was unfortunate enough to not know how the A/C system was installed or how it worked. If anyone has any information or a good starting point for me to start adding A/C to my GT I would be most appreciative. I now live in Texas and it is HOT ALL THE TIME here. A/C would be a god send if I could get it installed and working. Thanks in advance! NOTE: I would be willing to buy a complete system if someone is willing to sell one or have an extra lying around in their garage. Sub-Note: If I can only get the compressor. Is it possible to custom form factor and A/C system for my GT? |

Hi Josh, I'm in Sugar Land. I have the same problem, and have purchased a dash undermount system that I intend to install in the rear storage compartment, in my GT. My divider is vinyl covered plywood, with speakers installed, and a nice space in the middle is reserved for a 14" x 2" a/c register, from Peterbilt, that will shoot cold air (some day) right up between the seats. The hardest part about retro fitting the system, is finding a mount for the compressor. I bought two compressor mounts on eBay, for a Mazda RX7, and have been cutting and grinding on one. I think I have the compressor sitting nicely in the bracket, and now have to have a plate welded to it that will fit the three hole pattern on the block. You should come to the Texas Opel Club meet in Livingston. Here is the ad. for the meet. OK Ladies and Gentlemen, Here's what Ive come up with for the get together in October.I have reserved all the cabins 10 in total for the 3rd weekend in Oct.Fri.23rd,Sat.24th and sunday the 25th.The folks up in the office have been kind enough to hold all of them for me till I have to confirm a final count on August 15th. The cabins consist of two cabins to each building with a conecting door, cost is $15.00 per side, inside they have 2 fold down twin murphy beds with room for extra mattresses if needed, refrigerator and a electric stove all have A/C's.The Pool, playground, and pavillion are right in front of the cabins,Bathrooms and showers are in external buildings and are keep spotless by the staff here. Boat ramp fishing area is 5 minutes away.Perch and catfish fishing is very good in the area and kids have a great time.I believe this would be a good opportunity to bring kids and spouse if anybody so desires. If anybody would like to come earlier or stay longer just let me know and I will make arrangements. Lake Livingston is a great recriational lake with lots to do in the area. Ok. everybody please start letting me know so that I can tie all this together and lock all the cabins in,give me a call if you have any questions and to make your reservation with: Tom Kaye 210 Champion Way Livingston,TX 77351 tcavk@yahoo.com I'll bring the bracket to the meet if you want to see it. I think the system will work fine, the only downside is not being able to have cold air blowing in your face. I think the cab in the GT is small enough that it won't take too long to cool it down. Come meet the group in October! Wes |

I too would not consider installing the original AC in a GT. Rather as Gene suggested fabricate or buy a compressor mounting bracket for the Sanden compressor and go from there. Search for various AC installs on this site to get ideas. Aardvark, Mark Paar installed a system in his Manta last year; but it is in his trunk and may not be what you want to do in the GT.

Having just been down this path in A/Cing an Opel, In my opinion the only really hard part is coming up with the double crank pulley. Everything else is just a bit of time and fabricating and selecting components if you going with a modern system or combo of old and new.
My recommendation is to get your hands on the dual crank pulley first. Then plan the rest. There are several evaporators that can be made to work including the slick in-dash the Juan Blanco just did in his GT.

All great help, thanks so much. I will find the pulley first and see what I can do about the rest. I was hoping to keep the car original, but if a stock GT doesn't have A/C then I am going to have to suffer with a mod here and there.
