Unanswered: Sticky/stuck temp control

My controls for my temp adjuster seem to be jammed or somthing. I can get it all the way to hot, but only half way to cool. Where would be the obvious best place to see what's causing that?

It could either be the control lever track, the control lever cable, or the heater valve.

Here's a couple of things to try.

Can you get the full movement by pulling the lever towards you a little bit while you turn it towards the cool mark? If so, you have the common problem of the plastic track being broken.

Can you get the full movement by disconnecting the cable end at the heater valve? If so, you have either a clogged valve or you need to adjust the position of the cable at the valve.

If you don't get full movement when disconnecting the heater cable end, you might have a cable that is rusted or kinked. Or you could have some kind of blockage preventing the lever arm from making it's full range of movement.

Thanks Jerry,

Heres what I got. I was mistaken on which direction it would go. It will go all the way to the left (cool) but only halfway over to the right (Hot). I have the dash completely removed so I can see the cable trying to push the lever down on the far right side of the heater box. Im guessing that I might have something in there blocking it becasue if I try to manually push the lever down with a screwdriver, it doesn't want to go. It moves as if something is stuck in there.

I guess the big question is, what does it take to remove the heater box so I can take it apart and see whats in there (mouse nest more than likely)?

I've removed the obvious bolts, but its still stuck the the firewall like glue.

Thom;
It's been a while since I removed a GT heater, but, did you dis-connect the heater hoses to the two tubes going through the fire wall on the passenger side of the engine compartment? Also, if the unit has never been removed the factory sealer has harden to a point where made the heater unit stuck. The unit is sitting on a little shelf, back in a hole, so it's not going to just fall out. It will take a little work.

There should be two nuts on near the lower part of the heater box and one bolt connecting the box bracket to the body on top. After that, and if you have removed the heater hoses in the engine compartment along with disconnecting the heater cable end at the valve, it should just be a matter of wiggling and pulling the unit out. There is a gasket that goes around the two heater tubes and cable at the firewall that may cause it to seem hard to get out. And, yes on that factory foam seal that Gene says. And, those dang mice piss on everything and it seems to turn into a organic glue.

Alrighty,

Got the thing out, took it apart. No mouse poop or nests, but there was some rust and a lot of paint shavings. All in all its back together and all the vents open and close nice now.

Thanks for the assistance.

How do you mark this thing answered now?
